I have to say I certainly knew what sex was as a 6 year old. I got "the talk" when I started asking questions around age 4 or 5, and my mom sat me down and told me the whole baby-making process, with correct terms and everything.
That's how I think it should be, because you're already learning about the world and how it works; it just seems less traumatic than waiting until the kid is older (I knew a few kids who had to find out in school, and it totally rocked their worlds!). Plus, it also lead to the "appropriate vs. inappropriate touching" talk, which every parent should have with their child so they don't become victims of pedophiles.
As a result of that talk, I knew enough to not believe the neighborhood kids' versions of sex, knew enough to not get pregnant in high school (or college, or after). I think parents talking to their kids openly and honestly about sex would do a lot to prevent teen pregnancy, STDs, etc.
The only embarrassing thing for my mom was when were at Christmas mass and the priest said,"And unto us a child is born," and my 5-year old self misheard and screamed out,"Mom!! Be said uterus!!!"
But I definitely didn't have a clue what abortion was until I was older.

This has almost turned into as bizarre of a thread as the puppy mill one on the menagerie....
Guys, it's like arguing with a kid. There's no point? The valid questions you ask will be ignored or misinterpreted greatly.
I grew up outside of dc and went to the pro-life marches every year in dc. I saw SO many children there, right next to the gruesome photos of aborted fetuses, and even wondered myself why someone would bring their child to an event like that.
At the same time, i really find families who have politically opinionated young children (preteen- edit, i mean before preteen years or younger) very weird, too. With both parties, that is.
The pro-life march was an excused absence at my catholic high school, and encouraged by the staff. Round about junior year, i started to seriously question the implications of making illegal the procedure. For the last two years of high school, friends and i just rode the metro around, went shopping in Georgetown, and got Johnny rocket shakes before riding home.
I still regret going to the march those other years. I was so detached from reality, and how scary the loss of women's rights could be.
I really do find it interesting that there is such a concern for fetal preservation, but so VERY little support for under-served children and single mothers, and families living in poverty.
MrB's attempt at talking like a horse person, "We'll be entering in the amateur hunter-gatherer division...."

It is my opinion that anyone who would force a small child to attend or participate in a pro-life rally makes very poor parenting decisions. It is absolutely inappropriate even if the child later turned out okay in spite of it.
Are you out of your MIND?

This, once the fetus is born s/he and the mom are on their own

This. I know this wasn't the original topic of this thread, but I just can't get over someone taking a six-year old to an abortion demonstration. The fact that it sounds like it was MEANT to be ALL children holding signs is even more disturbing. Talk about exploiting children........
I truly would like to know exactly how one explains pro-choice vs. pro-life to a 6-year old... literally, WHAT does one say??

I would agree that "exploitative" is exactly the right word.

I feel exactly the same way....so there - we agree.

OK, I'll invoke Godwin's law.
Bringing children to political demonstrations reminds me of the way Hitler and the Nazis indoctrinated children.
BTW, Hitler was pro life when it came to Aryan women

This seems dangerously close to suggesting those Pro-Life are on par with Hitler.
I might think twice before making that sort of inference.
