    Default And from Reinbeck...

The New York State Dept of Agriculture announced the following today: Eastern Equine Encephalitis detected in a Westchester Co., NY Horse. Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) was detected in necropsy samples from an eight to ten year old Warmblood gelding today. The horse has been in Westchester County, NY, and Massachusetts for the last few weeks. The horse’s vaccination history in regard to EEE is not known. On 8-24-12, the Warmblood had acute onset of ataxia and increased digital pulses. The farm’s veterinarian examined the animal and initiated medical treatment and had to return within an hour, because the horse had dramatically deteriorated. The horse was severely ataxic, febrile, leaning and eventually went down. Since the vet and trainer noticed such a rapid, dramatic decline in the horse’s condition they elected to humanely euthanize the same day. There are other horses on the same premises but none are showing signs of illness and have since received a booster EWT vaccine. A necropsy was performed at the NYS Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and the brain was submitted to NYSDOH’s Wadsworth Center on 8/27/2012 for both Rabies and Arboviral testing. Rabies and West Nile Virus tests are negative.

Spoke to my vet about this, and on her advice we're going to do Fall Shots early--EWT and WNV this coming week. Her advice was for everyone in the area to do the same.

Hopefully the much drier weather we've had the past 10 days will help as well.

Yup. Pretty much the same advice given by the 3 practices I work closely with. Only difference is one says revax if you're 2, 4 or 6 months out from the last booster. Since it's mosquito born, it's not something I'm monkeying around with. Mine got their booster yesterday.

Mine said that for an adult who had received it for many years, we only needed to booster if it was more than 6 months since the last shot.

Which would be my feelings as well, if my pasture didn't back up on CT's answer to the "Wicken Fen!"

2 confirmed cases in southern Vermont. I'm having my vet out ASAP to do EWT & WNV. Hopefully he can get out tomorrow!

One of the practice vets with whom I've worked closely recommends revaccinating only if last booster was given >4 months ago. His horse is on the cusp of that. He revaccinated her this past weekend. Take from that what you may.

Are any of these infected horses surviving?

Two human cases in VT (one in my county)...one of them just died.

I'm ordering boosters for my horses today!

I talked with my local vet yesterday, and he said that since I vaccinated my hroses this spring, we should be fine. HOWEVER, I am not comfortable with that!

Can I get the vaccines online without a script? EEE & WNV is what I'm looking for.

Vermont has a suspected WNV case right now...

Yes you can. In fact, if you want to just booster everything, my local Tractor Supply (and therefore probably most of them) has a 5-way shot (which includes EEE) and a WNV shot right in the cooler in store.

Is there a shot for just EEE? Everything I've seen includes Tetanus.

I dunno, the EEE I get in the Spring WAS in the 5 way. Will check it out.

I couldn't find just an EEE shot so I ordered the West Nile Innovator w/EWT.

This is what I did for my herd. My vet says there's no issue with boostering the Tetanus as well.

That's what my vet said as well this weekend.
