Default Is there a reason alfalfa cubes make my guy gassy but alfalfa hay doesn't???

Can anyone think of a reason (ie something in the process of making the cubes?) that would cause a horse to get gassy when they are usually fine eating alfalfa in regular hay form?

A lower quality of hay is used in cubes, plus they are treated with a preservative to inhibit mold. Could be either of those factors.

Are you feeding the cubes dry? That'll do it-they're meant to be soaked till mush...

Actually you do not need to soak them. They can be fed dry.

I did soak them. I soak everything he eats pretty much. I saw a pony choke on a hay cube once and it was nasty plus I can imagine it would be eating like chalk for horses.. yuck.

It depends on the maker of said cubes - there are a couple of more local to you and me that are better than others and I cannot remember the maker's name, will have to see if I have an empty bag kicking around. Stuff from MasterFeeds isn't as good.
