    Default Why have Reserve Champion?

Hi all, I had a newbie pony parent ask me after her daughter won Reserve Champion, why have a Reserve Champion? Why not just have Champion? And I really didnt have a good answer for her.

I know how it works but why? Just to give out more ribbons?

I usually have answers for my parents but this one stumped me.

Anyone know the history, maybe that would help.

for the same reason we hand out silver and bronze medals?

From a points perspective, RC counts - there are points associated with it, so presumably a horse who consistently earned RC points might end up higher in the standing than a less consistent horse who occasionally beats him out for champion.

Then you might as well just have 1st place as well. I think it is a nice complement, and any reason the champion falls thorugh, reserve then steps up. And who doesnt love a tri-color ribbon!

As a recent RC in the Long Stirrup Hunter division in a teeny local show, I say it exists to boost confidence every time you see that pretty big ribbon hanging from your lampshade

Because the ribbons are still pretty.
    And it gives bragging rights.

I completely agree. I live in an area where bnt can bring in clients to our local show clubs and clean up. It is nice to have reserve champion and my own horse and I have received some, I don't think we ever received champion.

Lol, why have any place other than 1st?

2nd place is the first loser...after all.

A local show that no longer exists, used to have a Reserve reserve as well. It was fun. Nice ribbons, prizes and photo ops.

To provide solace to the person who tied for champion but had 1/2 point less over fences than the other guy.

Runwayz has it right. The most important reason for existing... it is so that IF the champion was found to test positive on a drug test or otherwise disqualified for any reason, the reserve champion would then become the champion.
