    Default prednisone side effects? Appetite?

Katy, the world's least lucky mare, is currently on prednisone (20 tablets a day for a few weeks before we start to taper). It is to treat inflammation of her heart muscle.

Since she's been on it, she has been fiercely hungry. Every meal is greeted as if she hasn't been fed in a week. Devouring as much hay as we will put in front of her. Kinda freaky, actually.

Vet says elevated appetite is sometimes a side effect of taking prednisone.

So to those of you with experience w/ prednisone: have you seen it do this?

I've only had dogs on pred, not horses.

But my dogs, when on pred, would eat anything and everything. It does cause increase in appetite.

Prednisone causes this in humans too ( ask me how I gained 10 pounds while on it!). You might also notice a wetter than usual stall as it frequently causes increased thirst. These effects diminish when dosage is stopped.

Increased appetite, increased urination, increased thirst. Once you taper off things get a little better but even after the last dose the side effects can hang around for another week or so.

Good to hear, thanks. Would like to see her holding weight better too; will have to be patient w/ that.

    This.

I've also seen humans become more agitated while on it (maybe because they aren't sleeping, and constantly hungry!), and I'm not sure if that could also be seen in some way in animals.

She has been a bit agitated, true. (good to know a pharmgirl on the board!)

Thanks for all your thoughts and good information. Katy is about 10 days into a several week long course of treatment. Crossing our fingers......

I was on it for about a week, and I wanted to eat everything in sight. I think it also made me itchy?

    Good luck with your mare!
