Default Pull On Field Boot Too Wide. Add zippers or...?

I've lost some weight so I dug out an OLD pair of field boots that have only been worn a couple of times only to find out that they're too wide in the calf. Should I have zippers put in? The top "tighted" and a gusset so I can still get them over my calf?

What's 'too wide'? Do they fall down? I PREFER the old style of boot where you could EASILY pull them on and off (no zippers) and add a pair of knee socks or long underwear when it got cold.

They are mostly too big at the top, I can live with them being a bit big in the ankle but they actually gap at the top. I'm afraid if I make the top smaller without elastic gussets or zippers that they won't go over my mid calf & zippers break... :S
