Miss B wears a 6" and I could have actually done a 6.25" in this!! Her mouth isn't that wide... she just has beefy lips.

Leather bits are legal for dressage. It is addressed on the same line as rubber bits.

Just for the record... I swear I searched the entire USEF rulebook and didn't see a thing about leather bits (saw the piece about rubber and synthetic bits, and the piece about leather curb chains, though). Maybe I should get my eyesight checked.

Bedford Tack in Shelbyville, TN whipped these up for me today.

They're a work in progress and open to suggestions, but for the low low price of $16.50 a piece, I'm willing to work with it!

They are harness leather, sized to order and the edges are beveled to make them round.

I told them I would inform the interwebz that they are making them and so here I am!

*snork* I had to laugh at the dusty dashboard in your picture, mine looks just like that. Those bits are a nice idea for a soft mouthed horse. Hope they work for your ponies.

Oh, the photo does it no justice!! It's SO dirty in there.

Another update: My student's pony went in her leather snaffle for the second time today at a show. Her dressage score dropped 10 points from her last test. First time the kid has ridden her in the bit. It's REALLY working well for her. Swinging back, not offended by contact! Weee!

Good for your student!!! Such bit is pretty intriguing. I wonder how long it will last and I guess it conforms to the horse's mouth quite fast.

I do find it interesting that a waterford is not legal for dressage, but a strip of leather is.

Waterford bits don't allow contact in the horse's mouth, which is the opposite of the dressage's goal.

I was down at Bedford again today and they said their leather snaffle sales had dropped off, so I thought I'd bump this up.

My persnickety mares are still going nicely in their leather snaffles. They're not chewers but their bits so no signs of wear.

They're also doing neckstraps for me now! AND making my maresie a custom sidepull with a leather snaffle and a rolled leather noseband. They see me coming and they're like 'oh lord... what now..."

I bet they could. I feel like if they cut the mouthpiece off a twisted wire full cheek it would probably be easy enough. You'd incur the cost of a full cheek snaffle and the creation of the leather in place of the previous mouthpiece. Want me to ask?

I'm interested in the bit too, but also couldn't find anything in the USEF rule book indicating its legality. I think I'll check with the USEF directly before I decide to buy. If they say it's legal, then it might make a good bit for one of my very fussy youngsters.

I'll mention it again when I go in. They told me they couldn't make a lot of things I've asked for and have managed to figure it out when I got more specific.

I wonder if part of it has to do with the little ridge on the center of each "bead"? May create little pressure points. Good question though!
