They have been doing this count since he was 90. There is one other active driver of a like age in Canada.

What makes it doubly cool is that he is driving a red trotter. I dont know if bloodlines have changed, but back in the day trotters were almost always bay or brown. Red trotters were rare. One trainer had one and it was always referred to as So and So's Big Red Trotter.

"He didn’t take up the sport until sometime back in the 1950s, he said."

Haha, guess that was late in his life!

Cool story, and amazing he has the reflexes and the strength to drive. Wonderful horse to take care of him, too.

Yup, Bloodlines have changed I mean, not that there's reds abounding but I can name several off the top of my head siring foals in the last 5 or 10 years that routinely throw reds. However a majority of the ones I'm thinking of have been exported and/or died, so it may revert. The mare this man was driving was sired by Wilson Wyoming, who was red himself, and I think flaxen maned if I'm thinking of the right horse. However, the other sires I am thinking of weren't chestnuts themselves; just produced chestnuts at liberty.

Maybe since he's 97, Leo doesn't plan too far ahead...

Based on the "walking wounded" rider reports here, it's probably not a good idea for anyone owning a horse to plan too far ahead.
