Has anyone had this problem before? My 3 yo jumped out today as I was leaving in my horsetrailer. 4 acre pasture, and a pony that is his pasture pal. I was leaving with the third horse when this happened. I have not had this horse but about 6 mos, and usually he does run and neigh when I leave..but this time he rolled right over the fence. Little scrapes, fortunately nothing bad. 5 ft smooth wire fence. I then put him in a stall and left him with pony, then left. He did ok. It was scary..I was afraid he would try and jump out of that , too. Its a shed row barn in pasture..so he can see me drive away from the barn too.
I guess my question..is it better to leave him in something small..like a stall, where he can't get a full steam run going, vs a pasture? help..any words of advice are appreciated. NEVER had this problem before. He is a 15'3" Friesian cross.
Give me your address and I will show up with my trailer.
In all seriousness, this guy sounds very talented. But I feel your frustration as I used to have a horse who did the same thing. I'd keep him inside for now both for his safety as well as yours, do he doesn't run loose or go off the property.
My silly mini jumped over the stone wall paddock last week when I took her pony friend out- and this is a paddock where the big guys are usually kept! It was quite impressive for my short legged, chubby girl
I owned a 14.3 h. Mo-rab, who would jump out of pastures. The largest one was from a small paddock with a run in stall over a 5' stallion pasture fence.
Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately, since the stallion was the sire of Seldom Seen and Last Scene), the stallion was in another pasture down the road from the barn.
If Prys wanted out of a pasture, then out she would go.
One summer, I helped out with some hunt horses in NC. One of the best of them always went in a certain pasture. One day, I turned him out in the wrong pasture. He calmly walked over to the 4' fence and jumped into the correct field. He was a great horse.
Good luck! I never found a way to stop my horse from jumping out, except by keeping her with a buddy or putting her in her stall.
Thank for all the examples! What seems to make sense for him..and working so far..is making his stall (shed row in pasture) a happy place..putting him in with nice flake of alfalfa when I leave...and doing it often during week..to where he is comfy in stall. I am letting him chill in there at random times, too..to just get used to it. Read a book, ect..let him hang. He has been getting calm and ok with it.
correction..after my husband told me later..he did not really'jump'..more of a roll(!) so no grand prix in future(; he just could not handle the trailer being 'right there' while I was opening the gate to leave.
Perhaps is was a brain disconnect with a youngster..and won't happen again...sure hope so!?!
