    Default What is a Champion?

I have googled different terms to figure out what is the criteria for the "champion" label in horse racing, no luck. Is it a subjective term that changes according to the source, or is there a definite type or number of races which must be won to earn the designation? What are the races/criteria?

Usually, in the US, it's an Eclipse award winner.

I have seen forum debates turn into cyber bloodbaths over whether a horse was "great" or not! To take it a step farther and label a horse a champion outside of an eclipse award is impossible to define.
