Today was my first trail ride in years. We had beautiful weather today and my cousin and I decided to go for a ride. The last time I went out was probably 5 years ago. My mare went out once or twice last year, ridden by another boarder. This was her first time out this year and her first time out with me.
Stupid me, I had forgotten my saddle pads at home that I had washed so I just decided to hop on bareback. I also broke the cardinal rule and went without my helmet because all I have is a black hunt cap. With it being nearly 90 degrees out today and full sun, I knew I would wind up sweating up under that thing and I just couldn't deal with that. No saddle, no helmet and first trail ride of the year? What could go wrong!?
So, you know that saying of "God looks out for fools and little children"? I was the fool today. I had a great time and my mare was awesome. She didn't take one wrong step, even with the turkey popping out of the brush! The only awkward moment was in getting off as I had horse sweat soaked through my pants. But, I was a bit relieved to see that sweat mark my derriere left wasn't as big as I thought it would be.
