Default When Horse People Do Stupid Things

Today was my first trail ride in years. We had beautiful weather today and my cousin and I decided to go for a ride. The last time I went out was probably 5 years ago. My mare went out once or twice last year, ridden by another boarder. This was her first time out this year and her first time out with me.

Stupid me, I had forgotten my saddle pads at home that I had washed so I just decided to hop on bareback. I also broke the cardinal rule and went without my helmet because all I have is a black hunt cap. With it being nearly 90 degrees out today and full sun, I knew I would wind up sweating up under that thing and I just couldn't deal with that. No saddle, no helmet and first trail ride of the year? What could go wrong!?

So, you know that saying of "God looks out for fools and little children"? I was the fool today. I had a great time and my mare was awesome. She didn't take one wrong step, even with the turkey popping out of the brush! The only awkward moment was in getting off as I had horse sweat soaked through my pants. But, I was a bit relieved to see that sweat mark my derriere left wasn't as big as I thought it would be.

Wait, you have a cardinal rule about wearing a helmet but don't have a helmet? How does that work?

I do have a helmet. It's a black hunt cap though. No vents = incredibly hot.

All I can say is that stuff happens even when all the safeteys are taken care of and a person rides carefully and thoughtfully....lucky you to have such a star of a horse.

Did the secret lover cause the incontinence?

Glad your mare took good care of you, she sounds like a keeper!

All I could think of when I read "When horse people do stupid things" was

    first, bring it to Coth.

second "If you don't have anything nice to say about someone, come sit by me."
Trainer's website - photos of my horse Airborne under About and Francesca Edwards also in media page 1

Default Just for the record . . .

The Gods pretty much do take care of fools, children, and beginners in my experience more often than not.

The really EPIC wrecks, the fatalities and the ICU-stay kind? Across the board happened to lifetime, expert professionals who got slipshod or distracted or took a horse for granted for a minute.

Something I think about every day. . .
