    Default Baseball hat for handlers?

Why do show ring handlers get all dressed up in nice pants and a jacket and then wear.... a baseball hat? Just wondering.

Like this (P.S. I like the color of the pants, even if they're a little big for the guy).

My guess, keeps hair out of face when running and can be used as an attention getter when standing them up....

Baseball caps are a very American thing. You don't see many in the breeding rings at shows in Canada.

Personally, I hate the look of it. I think a deerstalker or fedora type hat looks much more professional.

I would say, they have on on everyday and would feel sort of naked when working around horses without one :-D

You would never see this over here ! Also no jackets like that, just cleand pants - mostly black or blue jeans and a shirt with tie. Or a polo of the breeeding society. If cold knitted or sweatshirt sweater on top (often in color of registry and with signs of registry...

no idea, when I show Arabian sport horse on the triangle, it is always khakis, polo and sneakers, my trainer would have killed me if I went in w a baseball hat

Ray Francis always looks sharp in his western hat (with jacket, tie, etc.). I'd wear a western hat with my hunt coat if I had a reputation that would support such a statement!

It's been "the look" of the Big Name Handlers for years. Not all of them, but many of them.

The khakis/blue blazer/striped tie/baseball cap look is essentially the uniform at high end TB yearling sales. Buyers, sellers and random passersby all look alike.

At TB sales the hot young stallion with babies on offer is most commonly represented on the caps, followed by various KY universities. The cap is advertising space!

It is a way of advertising sponsorshipor owners. Some people have the face and can wear them, others look a bit hokey, or farmboy, I think.

On facebook, someone commented on the picture of the winning handler: "It may be a ball cap, but at least he is wearing a hat! Everyone in the breeding ring and all officials should wear hats!"

so is there more to it than advertising? or just an odd tradition?

I'm pretty conservative about attire for showing so the baseball hats look pretty "bush league" to me. And I REALLY wish some of these handlers would get pants that are way too long and drag on the ground and look dirty. I always feel if I'm distracted by the handler's bad turn out - it's not helping the horse they are handling!

These handlers spend hours out in the sun. They need something to keep the sun out of their eyes/off their faces. In our case, we wear a baseball cap branded with our sponsor's logo. Some wear their favorite sports team. Some just wear one that is a good color or design. I like the look. What I don't like is women wearing some foo-foo hat. Doesn't belong in the ring, distracts from the animals.

Good gawds. Are we really obsessing over a baseball cap? I think they look fine - keep the eyes out of the sun and are not attention-gathering. Now if Ray Francis ever showed up in anything but his cowboy hat, I might think the world had ended. This thread is really over the top. And fedoras died with Gerald Goldman (may he rest in peace)

All the other disciplines debate tack colour, fashion trends, and show attire, why can't we?

Sure, go ahead. Knock yourself out.

Me. I think it's about the horse. And these men and women do a great job. With
    or without a baseball cap.

I just can't get caught up in all the fashion drama. It's so very silly and shallow.

Most of the hats I see worn have the farm name, sponsor name or stallion's name on it so it's advertising plus keeping the sun at bay.

My question--do women ever wear baseball hats or just the men? I agree with lauriep that wearing a big foo-foo hat isn't right either.
