    I'll try! HAHA! I'm not tech-savvy! LOL!

The ride is all day, I think from looking at a map and ROUGHLY guesstimating the length, it's about 19 miles total, but I'm not certain. It feels like 100 miles by the time we get home! LOL!

Just what I needed after we got lost on trails today. Only 3 hours, but that's long for us! I'll download Backcountry Navigator. Just being able to track the route we took and be able to follow it back would have been huge.

Ok, I have the free Demo of BCN. Looks great so far. A few questions hopefully someone can answer. How do I create my own map? If I can't find one to download, can I ride the trail recording my track and then create the map from my ride so that I can mark waypoints for future use? If so, how do I do that? Also, how can I find out what trails I can get maps for before I pay for the App? I live in SE Ohio, and I wonder if the trails we ride are available or not. Thanks in advance for any help.

At the top of your screen, click on the second icon. It's next to the magnifying glass search icon.
Click on "My Location". It will activate your GPS. Click on that same icon and press "Record a Track'. Voila! You're recording your track!
Same icon to pause or stop track recording etc.
    Hope that helps!

OK, non tech savy person trying to figure this out.

Are you using BackCountry Navigator and transfering tracks to Every Trail 1) because BCN has other equestrian information and you like it? or 2) Because it works better on Android phones? or 3) because Every Trail's ride tracking capability is not as good ?

Is anyone using BCN on an iphone? For those with iphones, or who understand these things, which would you use, BCN or Every Trail to record a track on an iphone and share it?

I am working on a trail project where many volunteer riders may be asked to ride and record a trail, then send the track record to a central file, to make an area trail map. I have already checked with the BCN developer on file compatability. Lots to learn with this new technology.

I'd posted my "mare's nest" of trails I've ridden in Connecticut & recorded on my Garmin on Everytrail, and was wondering how useful that might be to anybody else. Glad to know that Everytrail can indeed be useful!

I am using Every Trail and transferring my tracks from BCN. If there is something like Every Trail for BCN, I'm not aware of it.

I traded emails with the BCN developer today, and transfering to Every Trail is suggested for cataloging and sharing. He also wrote that BCN is not real good for iphones. So next question is how is Every Trail for GPS tracking direct with Android or iphone without using the BCN ap, and thus skipping one step? Are they both using satalite GPS (GPX) without needing cell towers (like down in canyons)?

JeanM: What's your name on EveryTrail? I'll look for your rides...I may already have you on my list of people I'm following; I follow a few equestrians.

Plumcreek: A friend uses the EveryTrail mapping program on his Android and is happy with it. He also uses a handheld GPS unit too, though, so he has both options available. I prefer using the GPS unit because I can pop in two AA batteries while out on the trail and not lose power.

OK, probably a dumb question: Does tracking a trail with these apps on your smart phone use phone plan minutes? (I am really new to this).

I have both, but I've just been using EveryTrail. I didn't see any added value in BCN, and it's more complicated to use.

I'm use a Motorola android type phone with US Cellular, and it doesn't use plan minutes or anything, just lots of battery.

Here are some recent tracks I've done...

This was cool - I used it to mark all the trails that cross this road.

No, it doesn't use minutes on your plan but uses data so make sure you know how to check your data usage.

I downloaded Everytrail before BCN, and it worked fine by itself. I don't ever click on BCN, I just open Everytrail and hit track.

    Default Making trail maps

Plumcreek, you mentioned that you are trying to make a comprehensive trail map from the trails that riders send in to a central location. I want to do something similar but am having trouble doing it.

I have used both the Equitrail app and AllsportGPS app to record trails I ride. I'm not interested in uploading them to the app server but want to somehow convert them to a jpg or a file format that I can import into photoshop. I want to put all the trail maps into one file and color code the maps and then I can have a legend giving the data from the app (length in miles, ride time, etc).

Have you found any way to download the files you get from the app so you can put them on your computer HD? Do you know how to convert a gps file to a jpg file?

Any help from you or others would be greatly appreciated.

    TIA,

    Mary in Western NY

Has anyone used an app called Locus? I found mention of it in one of the reviews for EveryTrail or BCN..don't remember which..
