Famed photo: 'The Savage' 2012 edition at Churchill & Del Mar
Folks may recall the famed photo from the 1980 running at Belmont Park in the Tremont Stakes of Great Prospector savaging the winner, Golden Derby. The picture was by track photographer Bob Coglianese and was awarded the 1980 Eclipse Award in photography.
Overshadowed by the goings on up at Pimlico was the 2012 edition of the same - and yes the winner was taken down: Image here by Reed Palmer with Chilled (inside; trained by Paul McGee, with Corey Lanerie, up) trying to bite Zimmer (outside; ridden by Calvin Borel) in deep stretch of Race 9 at Churchill Downs.
Churchill Downs Media 5/18/12
Paul McGee thought he secured his 300th career training win at Churchill Downs when Chilled won a close photo finish in Friday’s $57,528 allowance feature, but the 49-year-old Louisville native was denied the milestone when Kentucky Horse Racing Commission stewards disqualified his colt to second for trying to savage Zimmer near the finish line.
A steward’s inquiry followed the race and it was determined that Chilled “intimidated” Zimmer which cost him the victory, according to KHRC chief steward Barbara Borden. Therefore, Chilled was disqualified and placed second and Zimmer was promoted to first.

Reason: incorrectly cited McGee as jockey of Chilled

I swear, you can almost see Chilled's right eye on Zimmer, with his left on the finish line!
So guess Chilled isn't so "chilled" after all!

This is amazing to me, that running can bring out the natural instincts of the horses...I am just intrigued by both photos, especially since the Chilled one has him with blinkers on...obviously he did not see him until he was close, and that may have precipitated the savage.

My dad owns and bred Zimmer. I've been getting the biggest kick out of showing the picture to people all week. We just received a blown up version for his office.
I've never seen anything like that happen before! It was so fast, I didn't even notice it while watching the race, but only the replay. Zimmer did drift over quite close to Chilled right before the swipe. I'm sure that's what precipitated it.
Fortunately, it was a lot less dramatic than the classic photo you linked to! No actual "chomping" occurred!

Peachy, by the way, that is pretty cool your family owns Zimmer
In 2012 we have another edition of 'the savage' this time from the West Coast:
Image: Aug 11, 2012 Del Mar Race Course: Woodman's Luck biting mad - although was not DQ'd
Woodman’s Luck had one win from 18 starts going into the sixth race on Saturday, but by the end of the race, he was biting mad as he was about to finish second for the seventh time in his career.
The 4-year-old colt twice tried to bite Romeo Royale at the wire. Nearly bitten, but not beaten, Romeo Royale prevailed and paid $23 to win with Alex Bisono aboard.

Glimmer,
Paul McGee is the trainer - not jockey.
But he'd probably be all smiles if he was told that someone thought he was fit enough to get in the saddle.
Great pix!!!!!

Sadly posting this update on Chilled
Daily Racing Form - April 25, 2013
Chilled dies of heart attack at 5
Chilled, a 5-year-old gelding who was featured by numerous media outlets last May when captured in an exquisite photograph attempting to savage a rival during the final yards of a race at Churchill, died of an apparent heart attack Wednesday morning (4/24/13) at Churchill when galloping out from a half-mile workout.
Calvin Borel, who was aboard for the work, was unhurt. Chilled was owned by Deerfield Farm Racing and Carl Pascarella.
The widely disseminated photo was taken by Churchill track photographer Reed Palmer. Chilled won the race by a nose but was disqualified to second for the incident. Jockey Corey Lanerie, who was aboard the gelding for that race, keeps a large, framed copy of the photo in the basement of his Louisville home.

That's too bad.
I wonder if he was territorial on the ground as well? He sure didn't like another horse in his space.
Incredible pictures,all.

Great photos. Now you have me trying to recall a photo of a race horse- maybe Marfa? running with a starter's glove in his mouth.

Sad update , though I'm very relieved to hear that Calvin Borel was not hurt in the incident.
