Riley my dog, as previously stated in earlier threads and posts, had been cold turkey switched to Earthborn Holistics from ToTW due to the Diamond recall/food issues.
He LOVES this new food; he is eager to eat his two meals and cleans the bowl at each feeding. While he was on ToTW I always plopped some canned pumpkin in his AM food to get him to eat in the morning and he liked it and I knew that it was not harming him. (he was not getting much, about a tablespoon and he weighs in at 63 lbs).
Here are some of the issues with his poo. His poos were firm and good color on ToTW and he would have an AM and a PM bowel movment. We are half way through the bag of the first EH bag and his poos are much darker and hard as rocks. Really, I though he had eaten pebbles and they passed through is system. Also, he as started to go only once a day, usually a mid-day poo and its L O N G like 8 inches seriously, I am not making this stuff up. It starts out hard then at the end it ends up semi-soft.
Please don't tell me that I have to change foods again.
Here are some things that you should know;
1) He is still getting his AM pumpkin, when I started to ease it out, he looked at me and said, " mom, where is my yummy pumpkin that I like so much......"?
2) He is getting less in each feeding than previously, he was getting 3 cups per day (at 370 calories per cup) and now down to about 2.25-2.5 cups per day (at 430 calories per cup).
3) His energy levels, playing, sleep pattern, treat intake, water intake have not changed.
I am going to pop into the vet on Tuesday when I am up in where my vet is. ( I am at school right now)
what are you worried about? pooping once a day is normal, and usually indicates good use of the food (instead of just pooping it all out); and unless the dog is struggling to pass the poop, hard poop is good. Color varies by intake and doesn't matter much.
I guess you've never seen raw-fed dog poop? Very healthy. Hard poop keeps the anal glands from getting impacted. Does look very different from the fiber-laden poop many dog foods create.
Honestly I'm not seeing an issue, hard at the beginning and soft at the end sounds like what my dogs do every day. Color(and odor) are completely dependent on what type of food they are on. I can tell if your dog is on good food or Beneful just by the look/smell.
I wouldn't change the food just over this, when I looked into Earthborne for a friend it seemed like a pretty good food. Besides, once a day means less poop to scoop!
