    Unhappy Truck questions...again! and should I sell my "new" trailer?

    Hi All!

    Still looking for a truck. Thank you for reading my saga! Have searched a lot on good 'ol Craigslist and learned a bunch too.
    Saw a BEAUTY - 2000 F350 diesel dually crew cab 78k 4x4(I think) that was given a face lift with the snazzy new chrome super duty front, stacks, beautiful big rig wheels and is already set up for towing. So, so nice but too much at $19k and my dad is worried that private parties have no warranties.

    So to humor him I am now trying some dealers. Am I crazy or is a 1999 F250 super cab (not crew) Lariat package (whoopteedo with a genuine cassette player) OUTRAGEOUSLY priced at $15,899? Sure...it has only 40k miles on it but really???? Also, some folks tell me an older truck with low miles is actually a detriment and that gas trucks need to be driven regularly - what say you?

    Then this "truck" specialist dealer offered me not one but two 6.0 litre F350's. I shot him down and said exactly this, "I appreciate the time you are giving me talking on the phone now but I think we both know that the 6.0's are crap. Let's not even go there or I'll be mighty insulted".

    More saga - After reading the other thread about the "new" truck being too high for the "old" trailer, I am now inclined to look at flatbeds. I fear I may run into the same issue with my 1986 Tracer gooseneck. Ack!!!! I just bought this classic beauty gooseneck this spring. My good friend suggested I sell it and get a lighter weight, lighter duty, tag a long and then could get an F150 or Tundra. She is practical. I love my Tracer but can't use it until I get a truck that can pull it (heavy sucker - all steel). What to do?????

    i think in new england it entirely depends upon the rust.
    i'd LOVE a new to me truck with low miles and no rust.
    any chance either of them is white? and if you don't buy will you pass along the dealer contact info?
    i wouldn't sell my rig unless i had already decided on a truck and it was not a good fit.

    Having been through the new truck search last fall (not new, but newer),
    the price on the 2000 F350 is not too high. I've seen them for as high as
    $24K with under 100k miles, with the 7.3L diesel engine. That engine adds to the price.

    To get an idea on prices, check out autotrader.com or cars.com. You can do for your part of the country or go nationwide and then narrow it down
    by make, model, engine, etc.

    Extended warranties are available on older trucks through private companies.
    I got several quotes on a 2002 F350 diesel we were seriously considering.

    Just to some research on transmissions...some of Ford duallys back in that
    time frame (like 1997 for sure) had major transmission problems. Can't remember the transmissions model number. Pulling a CarFax is a good idea...
    many also have maintenance records where work was done by a dealer or
    shop that participates in their system. Most dealers will provide you with one
    although some prefer to use AutoCheck or something like that which I didn't find as informative as CarFax.

    I just bought a 2000 F-350 with the big 7.3L diesel engine, 4 x 4, Super Cab, Long Bed in BEAUTIFUL condition. Even white color which matches my trailer!!!

    Now - it had high miles, but a diesel engine can go FOREVER, and it was perfectly maintained - brakes, new transmission(s) etc. It vetted CLEAN!

    I got it from a Private Party for a RIDICULOUSLY LOW PRICE ($7500)

    It took me awhile to find this truck but I am in LOVE with it. It works fine with my very old 1994 Steel Turnbow Gooseneck Trailer. No adjustments needed.

    And the truck I had before, that hauled the same trailer was a 1990 F 250 XLT with the 7.5L, 460 big block (gas though)

    So my super Old F250, and my not-so-old F350 both fit fine on the old trailer. Though my newer F350 (year 2000) sits higher. It has the MINIMAL clearance above the bed rails. right at 6"

    WOW, having just done a truck search, that is a RIDICULOUSLY low price unless the miles were REALLY high. You got lucky! I was hoping to wait it out to get "lucky" myself but the old truck had different plans for me and not-so-conveniently died.

    Found out that trucks hold their value unbelievably well!

    My trailer will definitely need adjusting to fit the truck, but I can't see how it could have been avoided since all trucks are higher now. The trailer is a 93 Trail-et. As I mentioned in my other post, the trailer is perfect for my needs, so it's worth the $ to have it adjusted (now that I found a lower price to have the axles blocked!). If your trailer is in good condition, maybe you could do the same thing if needed. It seems used trailers are just as hard to find as used trucks, so if you look for both at the same time, you may lose your mind!

    Not really that high, with such low miles, IF you're talking the 7.3L and not some gas-sucking V10. And aside from that, I bet if you said 'Let's talk price', that salesman would immediately come in at ~$14k. Maybe even $13k, depending on how they do things.

    Even at that... it may not be a bad deal if you don't mind the gas mileage. I drive mine daily, so it was a major consideration. I think a friend of mine paid ~12k for a similar, 2000 V10 supercab longbed wth fancy shmancy interior and low miles.

    I'll be driving my 7.3 til it croaks. Just rolled over 160k and happily chugging along, only major work done to it was due to a highway-speed accident on black ice (just bodywork at the time, new rear end a year later). I just can't stomach the single digit mileage my gas truck friends get while towing.

    I love my 7.3L diesel F350.....will keep it till it dies. Admittedly, I got it for such a good deal becauase it had nearly 200K miles on it - BUT it's had transmission replaced twice, brakes redone multiple times all maintainance done perfectly. It runs STRONG!

    AVOID the Ford V10 like the plague!! Do NOT go there!! They are known for problems (particularly spark plug),low power and awful mileage!! I think there are class action suits of the crappy design of this engine. Ask a mechanic how much fun they are to work on

    But still fun to test drive trucks, but really, skip the V10.

    My husband bought his 2001 F350 7.3 diesel for $8000 with 112,000 miles on it a couple years ago from the dealership he works for. Everyone said that mileage is just starting to get broke in. The previous owner had put a hole about the size of a basketball in the driver's side dually fender hitting a bank drivethru and she said the 4-wheel drive didn't work.

    Hubby was able to patch the hole himself and the 4-wheel drive works, you just have to lock it in manually instead of inside the cab (easy to fix with the right part, but not worth it when we rarely use the 4-wheel drive). Those where the only issues it had. He's had numerous people ask to buy it, but he's in love with it and plans to keep it until it dies.

    We haven't had a warrenty on the past couple vehicles I bought through dealerships since the vehicles had higher miles. Buying from a private party can sometimes save you a couple thousand. I wouldn't let that deter me as long as I had a knowledgable car/truck person with me.

    Was the 99 F250 a diesel? If so that is quite possibly a very fair price. Those trucks are fabulous. The one I am selling has just over 100K miles on it and it's priced in the same ballpark... I've had quite a few inquiries so far.

    As others have pointed out, you can get extended warranties from several companies and you will want to do a PPE on whatever you are interested in anyway, so you know what you are buying.

    I sold my 2000 F-350 7.3 for 5500.....but it had 415k miles on it! And still ran like a top!

    Shoot! I'm still driving and loving my '92 F250 7.3 with 160K miles on it and plan on driving it forever! LOL! I has some irritating, non-motor, mostly cosmetic things that annoy me but it's still solid as all get out.

    Edited to add: mine is diesel.

    If the F-250 is gas, it is a nice truck, but I would say that estimate is about $5000 too high. I have a 1999 F-250 Super Duty Super Cab that I paid $10,800 for in 2006 (maybe 2005) with 103,000. Hate to say it out loud, but still chugging. If it is diesel, it maybe an OK price.

    Good luck, there are decent trucks in MA, you have to look really hard. Have you tried Craigslist? That is where I got mine.

    Sorry, just saw it is gas. I have a V-8, but that dealer has that truck over-priced.

    Just not if its a V10. Sure, any make can have its lemons, but the V10 has a serious design flaw. Here's the link to the class action suit, no idea what the current status is.

    But ask any mechanic about that spark plug design and they will agree!

    I hope that whatever make, model you select, you seriously consider diesel. You won't regret it!!
