Default How do I add a smiley, bold text or other formatting to my post? What is UBB Code?

UBB Code helps you add formatting to your message. There are two ways to do this: using the Instant UBB Code buttons (which appear over the text box for your message, when you're typing in a post), or by typing in the code yourself. If you don't see these buttons, read the second post in this thread.

    To type the code yourself:

To add a URL or "hotlink" to your post:

This will add a website link to your post, so someone can click on a web address and automatically go to that website.

If you type the full internet address, like http://www.chronofhorse.com, the hotlink will appear automatically.

    OR

Click the "URL" button. A window will pop up asking you to enter the complete URL for a website, starting with "http:// ..." (For example, http://www.chronofhorse.com.) Enter the address, and click OK.

Another box will pop up, asking for a title for the link. (For example, "The Chronicle of the Horse.") Type whatever you'd like to call the link in that box, then click OK.

Then the link would appear like this: The Chronicle of the Horse

    OR

You can type in the UBB Code yourself, like so:

    http://www.chronofhorse.com
(without the spaces after "url" and before the ] )

and it will appear like this: http://www.chronofhorse.com

If you want to give a title to your link, do it like so:

    The Chronicle of the Horse
(without the spaces after "url" and before the ] )

To add a clickable email address to your post:

Click on the "email" Instant UBB Code button. A box will pop up, asking you to type in the complete email address (for example, joesmith@aol.com). Type it in, hit OK, and the correct code will be inserted after whatever text you've typed in your message.

    OR

    Type in the code yourself.

    joesmith@aol.com
(without the spaces after "email" and before the ] )

To add bold text to your post:

Click on the "Bold" Instant UBB Code button. A window will pop up, asking you to type in whatever text you'd like to make bold. Type in the words you want to appear in bold, click OK, and the code will be added after whatever text you've already typed in your message.

    OR

    Type in the code yourself.

    [b ]Like this[/b ]
(without the spaces after "b" and before the ] )

    It will appear: Like this.

To add italics to your post:

Click on the "Italics" Instant UBB Code button. A window will pop up, asking you to type in whatever text you'd like to make italic. Type in the words you want to appear in italics, click OK, and the code will be added after whatever text you've already typed in your message.

    OR

    Type in the code yourself.

    [i ]Like this[/i ]
(without the spaces after "i" and before the ] )

    It will appear: Like this.

To quote text from another source:

Click on the "Quote" Instant UBB Code button. The text "" (without the spaces) will automatically be inserted in your post. Type (or paste) whatever text you want to quote between the
and
.

    OR

    Type the code yourself. Put
(without the space) before whatever text you want to quote, and
(without the space) after it.

    It will look like this:

    <BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>Quoted text<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

To add code to your post:

If you want to type code, like HTML, in a post, use the "Code" Instant UBB button. Click on it, and the text "" (without the spaces) will appear in your post. Type whatever code you want to quote in between
and
.

    OR

    Type
(without the space) at the beginning of the code, and
(without the space) after it.

    It will appear like this:

    <pre class="ip-ubbcode-code-pre"><HTML>
    <HEAD>
    <TITLE>Title</TITLE>
    </HEAD>
    </pre>

To add a bulleted list to your post:

Click on the "List-start" Instant UBB Code button. It will insert the text "
" (without the space) in your post. This indicates the start of your list.

Then hit the "List-Item" button. This will bring up a window where you can enter a list item. Type in the item (ror instance, "Item one"), then hit OK. The text "[* ]Item One" (without the spaces) will be inserted in your post.

Repeat this process for each item in your list.

When you're done, hit the "List-End" Instant UBB Code button. This will insert the text "
" in your post.

    OR

Type in the code yourself. To indicate the start of the list, type "
" (without the space).

Then enter your list items. Type "[* ]" (without the space) before each item.

At the end of the list, type "
(without the space.

The finished product looks like this:

    <UL TYPE=SQUARE><LI>first item<LI>second item<LI>third item
Default

You can adjust how the box where you enter your posts works by selecting which "message editor interface" is selected in your account. This interface determines whether you'll have to enter code yourself or can just click on an icon to have the code entered for you.

    You have three options:

Basic -- just gives you a box to enter text, and if you want to bold, italicize, add a smiley, etc., you have to know the UBB codes, as explained in the first post, and type them in yourself to make it happen.

Standard -- gives you all of the clickable icons to automatically add the coding to your posts. When you're composing your message, you'll see the weird coding for something to be bolded, or for a smiley, not the smiley itself. If you want to check how it'll look before you post it, you can select "preview post" before you submit your reply.

Enhanced -- this is a full WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor, like you would have if you were using a normal word processing program. You click bold, and the text looks bolded, while you're composing your message. You add a smiley; you see the smiley.

To select which interface you'd like to use:

    - click on "User CP" from the left side of the blue bar at the top of the page

    - click "Edit Options"

    - scroll all the way down to the bottom of the list, where you'll find the "Message Editor Interface" selections, under "Miscellaneous Options"

    - click "save changes" and you're all set!
