Default Someone looking for 2 horses from Beulah Park (FOUND and ALIVE)

I saw this posted on Facebook and thought I would pass it along.

    "Mary Johnson

Anyone that has any contacts with kill buyers or kill buyer middlemen, please reach out to them ASAP and ask them if they know the whereabouts of Canuki (tattoo #L16490) and Cactus Cafe (tattoo #I07460). Both of these horses were hauled out of Beulah Park on Tuesday afternoon, May 1st, by Mark Wedig, a well known kill buyer middleman based out of Mountaineer. Wedig is also a TB owner and trainer. Both of these horses had a place to go and I had planned on picking them up at Beulah on Saturday to take them to their new home. We have confirmed that Wedig pulled out of the Barbarino Training Center, which is close to Mountaineer, with with a load of horses last Thursday. We will pay $1000 per horse ($2000 total) CASH! Photos of horses are on my FB page."

Somebody must have the guys number...how'd he end up picking up the horses...ask at the track...Barbarino must have a way to contact him. Does he just show up and take off with horses? It is just so sad!

I have no idea. I've just seen this posted a few places on Facebook and thought maybe someone over here might be able to help the lady out. I would think the cash being offered would be more than meat price yes?

If it's the Mark Wedig that is also an owner/trainer, that was involved with some Mike Gill horses, his address is in Iowa.

Not sure of a phone number but he has a page on uship.com where you can contact him for a quote, perhaps he could be reached through there.

eta... found a number, sent it to the lady on facebook.

I didn't see anything about this on Alex Brown, so posted over there. I sure hope they find these guys!

According to Mary Johnson's FB page, these horses were slaughtered in Canada on Friday May 4th before she even knew they were gone. Barbara Price who Mary says is based out of Mountaineer handed both horses off to Mark Wedig. They must have went straight on the truck to Canada.

I don't know which part is more sad, that 2 horses who had homes were slaughtered or all the rest of the horses on the trailer that had no place to go. I am not anti-slaughter, but this still saddens me.

Or that people like wedig are involved with racing. Seriously, he acts as a bloodstock agent, trainer and owner, and does this stuff too? People like this need to be run out of the sport.

Yes along with Barbara Price, who knew they had a new home but couldn't wait a few more days until they could be picked up. May they all rot in hell.

Seriously I don't know how they live with themselves.

If it is true that these two horses left a track in the US on Tue and were slaughtered in Canada on Friday, it demonstrates yet another law of unintended consequences. I have no idea if Beulah has a Zero Tolerance Policy on selling to killers but if they do, I understand why these horses were killed so fast. Zero tolerance means in effect "get rid of the horse FAST!" Horses standing around in pens at auctions can be traced. You can't prove a negative (that he wasn't killed) unless you show up with the horse, which of course, you can't.

I don't know how people can live with themselves when they do this stuff, especially with the knowledge that 2 of these horses had homes waiting for them.

If those horses were all slaughtered so quickly, then someone must have falsified the health records of all with regard to bute. If well over 90% of all California race horses had received bute according to a survey a few years ago, I would think that this same percentage or greater would carry over to these particular horses.

Perhaps the SH and Canadian authorities should be made aware of this, even if they wind up ignoring it.

I can't for the life of me figure out how these people live with themselves. For the love of God, they could have made more money selling them outright, if they're into selfish motives. And if they were moral which they are not couldn't they at least call CANTER or such?

I ride a Tb that was slaughter bound and no one can figure it out. I'm just disgusted and I want to be part of the voices that are outraged.

and again, so much for the bogus 6 month waiting period before slaughter!

There are a lot of other posters on COTH with much more knowledge about the racetracks than I have. But when DH and I bought two horses off the track in Ohio in 2006, a groom commented to me that the killer truck came by regularly and the going rate was $300. This was infuriating because we were shown horse after horse with major problems and a trainer on the end of the shank wanting $1500 and up. I've owned numerous OTTBs and wanted a project horse.

We came home with two. The nice big gelding was $3400 and for whatever reason, DH insisted on buying that horse. The trainer was such a cow, she blackmailed us into taking another one, for $500, to close the deal. Then she ruined that horse by putting steroidal ointment in the mare's eye that resulted in melting ulcers and massive vet bills along with a lot of pain for this poor mare that did nothing to deserve it all.

At least she got off the track and we found her a job as an embroyo transfer mare by pulling a lot of strings. My perception of racetrack folks has long been that they hold the horse til the last possible second, then dump it without looking back. Do trainers get burned? Absolutely, and there are a lot of asshats that make big promises to rehome but flip the horses or send them to auction if they're not a fast profit.

I'd love to see more openness at the tracks. CANTER has done a great job starting that dialogue and I'm a huge fan. It has opened doors that seemed closed to everyone but dealers before. Yes, trainers are busy and selling racehorses to the inexperienced is a bad idea. But a middle ground would be wonderful. I long for the day that every racetrack has a barn and arena dedicated to evaluating and marketing horses for a better future. What percentage of the daily handle would that take? The PR would be wonderful.

Doing some research here (literally nothing to do at work) and Beulah has an anti slaughter policy
    http://www.beulahpark.com/new07/Raci...%20Release.pdf

eta: From reading Mary's FB page it looks like Beulah and Moutaineer are cooperating. Hopefully some heads will roll on this one.

Barbara Price had a gelding she owned and trained in a $5000 claiming race 5/8/12 at Mountaineer. The horse was last beaten 29 lengths. Price doesn't have much of a record as a trainer, record can be found @ www.equibase.com. Makes one wonder what she is doing in racing/around horses.
