I am 5'6 and I just rode a 14.2 pony last week. I had so much fun. The only proble is my legs are long so I have to raise them up for the cues. I may switch to ponies !!!

well, i was glad to see digery got a vote in for longears!......

i have a 14h mule and a 13.2h riding donkey......the donk is chunky , so takes up a lot of leg, for those who are taller or longer of leg........and a 13h hafie, also a chunk...
i,too, went to the shorter, studier, more calm mount as i approached "vintage" age, and just LOVE small ones......

Twinkie I'm 5'6" on my 13.3hh pony and am having the same problems with my leg cues. I finally broke down on got spurs which allow me to not be so drastic with lifting my leg in order to make contact. Worked like a charm!

I just fininshed 4th in the BN championships in Area V (eventing) on a 13.2 hh pony! We are having a blast and there were several adults with ponies there too!

You might want to look at Paso Fino horses. Most are technically ponies but don't tell them that! My boy is 14'2 (he is large for the breed) and I'm 5'6". He's a blast to ride and the gait is smoooooooth.

LOL, I am 5-1, 115, and 57 years old. I just recently went from a 17h Saddlebred to a 14.1h Paso Fino. I wanted a horse that I could actually get on without help. I LOVE my new boy!

I've got 4-5 years before I can by my dream horse/pony but 14.2 is what I'll be looking for - either Arab, Arab/Connemara, or Arab/Welsh. I really need to quit looking though, because I keep falling in love. This guy is a little bigger than I want but totally adorable:

I know I'll find the right one when the time is right, but the waiting is just so hard!!!

    Also lusting after this one:

One cure for that is swan neck spurs:

These work best for me and my long-ish legs + my small horse. Sometimes people give me the stink eye because they are long, but it is a mild spur.

Or go Paso Fino. No 'leg' required. Our largest stallion is 14.3, barely. Mostly they run 13.3-14.2, but they 'ride' a lot bigger than that.

Someone on this board had a signature that read 'come over to the dark side, we have cookies'. Forget who, but it totally describes the transition to ponies (or pony-sized horses). Bwa-ha-ha-ha! Welcome!
