I thought you all might enjoy pics of my new mowers. I've had them for a while but enlisted their services on my aisles this weekend. My tractor is down and that is what I use for mowing usually. With the addition of a few electric fence gates at the end of my aisles, I let my six cattle in to take down the grass/weeds. They are doing a fantastic job!
I may have to make this standard practice and save on diesel fuel this summer! I'll bet all together I have at least an acre tied up in aisles between my paddocks and pastures. the aisles are 16 or more feet wide so it's not too cramped.
I love the way cattle graze too...they are not picky and eat almost everything as well as the areas where horses would not eat. Best of all they turn that grass into yummy meat! I have three heifers, an old cow I bought to slaughter this spring for burger, a steer for processing later this summer and a young bull.
Our grass/weeds are going gangbusters with all this rain and unusually warm weather.
Here are pics of my Angus/herefords doing their new job with obvious enjoyment being watched by envious horses. The horses are not afraid of the cattle and have plenty of room to move away if they choose.
Thanks! They are funny! That is Bossy in front and Shorty behind her. I also have another called Spooky. I haven't named the bull yet. I can't decide if he's a keeper or not. I usually call the Steer TBone to set the appropriate mood. The old cow is not named either. She has udder problems so her days are numbered I'm afraid. I haven't had the two boys or the old cow long...just got them in Feb.
Isn't it amazing how well they mow? That was just one day of work. ;-) I just showed my husband the pics and he just grinned and laughed. We both hate mowing. I'm planning to fence the whole back half of the farm to let them keep the grass down off my electric so I don't have to mow or spray so much.
We let the horses out in our tractorways but I'm afraid they leave tufts, and we also don't have your nice fencing on our perimeter - is that the brown horseguard tape or centaur or what? Very sensible use of their time!
