Has anyone done this? I am looking into doing this next year using the company International Volunteer HQ. From my limited research it seems like this company is legit and most people are having positive experiences.
I would be looking at the Kenya teaching programs, or possibly Guatemala. I'd love to hear any stories others have, either with this company or any others!
I did with Global Vision International (GVI) for six months as an Intern in South Africa. I worked at 2 different nurseries, an orphanage, and a primary school. I ended up actually working for the primary school (no pay) as a librarian. It's an amazing, incredible, eye opening experience. PM me if you'd like (much) more detailed info and more pics than you'd ever know what to do with.
My main advice is to give as much time as you possibly can manage. Volunteers have more impact the longer they can stay, and you'll get more out of it.
