Surprised that no one has mentioned Full Moon Farm in Finksburg, MD. They have a nice open XC course and inviting jumps, some terrain, not scary. And don't forget the port-a-potty jump! They also have 'pipe openers' where you can take your greenies (horses and students) out on course and give them a lead around, if needed.
Very true that the Fair Hill unrecognized feels like a recognized event. Loved doing elementary on the big course.
I tolerate all kinds of animal idiosyncrasies.
I've found that I don't tolerate people idiosyncrasies as well. - Casey09
What are the ones in Va.? I'm near Warrenton/Middleburg area.
Closest would be the Dominion Valley Pony Club Horse Trial at Foxcroft school (April 15).
Over time, this has varied from marvelous to awful, depending on the competence of the current crop of Pony Club parents.
Next would be Loch Moy (Maryland Horse Trials) just a few miles beyond the Point of Rocks bridge on Rt 15.
Then Waredaca, still withing reasonable driving distance.
For Combined Tests, CDCTA has one next weekend (St Patricks) at Morven Park, and a CT with dressage and Show Jumping / Cross country combined course in Culpeper on April 7 (day before the rec HT). There is also another CT in the middle of the summer, I forget the date.
River Bend PC has a traditional CT at Frying Pan Park sometime in March- I forget the date.
chief feeder and mucker for Music, Spy, Belle and Tiara. Someone else is now feeding and mucking for Chief and Brain (both foxhunting now).
Giving a shout out for Olney, which was just mentioned in passing, at Olney Farm, too -- course is same as recognized.
I don't think you can go wrong doing unrecognized events mostly at the recognized venues. The events that do not have a licensed course designer wandering over the property once in a while really do show a big difference to me as a rider. For that reason I try and stick to the starters held at the recognized venues. I don't care HOW many horse trials I've ridden in, designing is NOT transferable from the saddle to on foot but a lot of people THINK they can.
Oh and don't forget Carousel -- DVCTA hold the event there, even though it is a Delaware event (run by PA people).
Also Elysian Hills near Hume- highly casual and friendly. They have a bunch. The only thing I don't like about DVCTA at foxcroft is the stadium indoors, but thats because i've had some spooky fools. So its a good school for them but makes me feel fairly futile.
