I may be getting bogged down in too much detail micro-managing minerals, but what bothers me, is that most ration balancers have added iron, which hardly any horse is lacking. Additional iron only hampers absorption of cu/zn, both which can be lacking more easily.
When one then does find a general vit/min supplement containing good levels of copper/zinc without added iron (such as Pre-Ox Horsetech or California trace), those then contain added selenium, something that can be toxic when overdosed and is usually already added to any fortified feed.
In short I'd love to find a balanced copper/zinc/manganese supplement without iron and without selenium. I browsed a ton of products, seeing cross-eyed by now, but cannot find such a thing.
I don't think you can buy a "balanced" supplement with all three as you are using them to balance what is in your hay and/or feed. Horse Tech also has all three available. Balancing to pasture, I have to add manganese, but with the hay we buy, I don't....
Thanks, I didn't realize Horsetech offers custom mixes. Something I will look into for sure. For now I'll just get the individual ones from uckele until I've made up my mind what exactly I want in a vit/min supplement (I'm turning the concept into rocketscience ).
Thx for the measurements ainsley, gives me a place to start.
I agree that unless you have a good feel of what's in your hay, it's a bit hit or miss to properly balance stuff. But as a start I don't want to add what I know for sure they are not missing, if anything already have in overload, being the iron in specific.
