I am sure each case is different, but my horse had surgery the first of September for the removal of a front ankle chip which occurred the day before the surgery. On January 1, I cantered him for the first time. He had stall rest and hand walking for two months - twenty minutes a day, the second month. Then I tack walked him for a month while he had medicine paddock turnout. In December we began working up to five minute trot sets up to four sets a session. Now he is ready to resume his jumping career. During his recovery he never took a lame step, but we never asked him to move off the Vet's recovery program. I hope you are as fortunate. Just take it slow and make sure he is conditioned before you put him back to serious work.
