What a scary story. Everything bad that we have nightmares about. Horse stolen, used for testing, and almost sent off to slaughter. It's a wonder that the mare survived all the "breeding to test for diseases."

This is why I am conflicted about rescues. And why I never get mad at the rescues who go to auctions, go into the kill pens, and buy these horses. That mare is alive today because someone was willing to do all the work to save her.

Neat story with a great ending.

The part about "testing for diseases" seems a bit strange.
I wonder if the reporter didn't quite get that quite right?

To find your horse after so long was a wonderful set of coincidences.
Now, if she just found that thief.

The 'testing for diseases' was CEM test breedings, the method used to detect CEM in stallions, per other articles I saw on this story.

I was wondering about that, but then, I think they have developed a test for that now?

There is some initial swabbing and testing, but live cover of two CEM-free mares, then culturing the mares, is still part of the import test protocol.

    Thanks for the information.
We quit breeding before that was a known concern, so was going on hearsay only.

I wonder if they got the police involved when the horse went missing and if they ever found that thief.

I purchased a mare that had been used for CEM test breeding, and I wouldn't say I "rescued" her. They treated her like a queen! She went on to have two healthy happy foals for me.

    Thanks Mike,
Nice to have a happy story. I refuse to open the sad ones anymore.

Are the test mares aborted if they get in foal?
