Default Sexy Rexy Lesson Photos w/Dean Graham

So I was able to trailer over and have a lesson with Dean today. He has been on Rex twice since he was cleared for riding (the day before Tday and the Wed after) and I got on him last Sunday (previous thread). Its his first time off property to work in over 7 months and his 2nd time off property since getting hurt at the end of May.

At the beginning, I was hand walking him in the arena while Dean took a breather between horses. Rex was fussing with a fly and was kicking at it, reaching around trying to bite it, and then TADA straight up. He got a little tall... But I saw it was a horse fly... yes in JANUARY. He got a littlew antsy when my friend led her mare away and when Dean got on, he wasnt too keen on having to work instead of socializing. He humped up his back and lept around a bit and gave out some half ass bucks (though if I had been on, they would have seemed big lol). But Dean just asked him to go forward and asked him to do a little shoulder in. Once he started to do that, he relaxed and gave some fabulous work.

After seeing his little spectacle at the beginning, I was a little nervous getting on, which is SO apparent in this photos (can we say defensive body position?!) but after a few minutes, I mentally felt much better but I guess position wise.. not so much. Im not happy at ALL with my left leg (wth is it doing most of the time?! def sitting crooked ugh) and def can see the defensiveness but he felt amazing and we had some really really lovely work and even cantered for the first time since the accident too (which was lovely btw). At the end, we were both tired so did a little baby TOH and TOF.

I freaking forgot my camera on the counter but luckily my friend was there with her camera and left it for hubby to video for me. The settings arent super friendly for grabbing stills but there are pics none the less. My editing software is making the clips all choppy b/c I was going to upload some vids so I am going to see if my friend can do that for me.

I will say I was able to fish the stirrup leathers through the top of the stirrup AND used the mattes pad and felt 100000% better than on Sunday.

I love how he just gets on and laughs when they are silly and just asks them to go forward.. b/c its SO easy (for him!)

A little after that photo, my friend left her mare to her trailer and Rex got a little.. excited. Jigging back I was trying to stop him and he was backing up and I just didnt want him to rear like he did when I was handling him on the ground so he stood still for a few seconds and then I got off. I *SHOULD* have pushed him forward and then gotten off but self preservation and all

I think you should consider yourself very lucky to have somebody of Dean's caliber work with your youngster! It's very important to have a confident rider on a green horse to help it gain its first impressions - Dean most certainly does that!

Looking at the rest of the pics, I think you'll do well with your horse as long as you continue to have somebody like Dean check on your progress.

    Good luck!

I just wanted to say that I LOVE the looks of your horse! Very nice boy!

I think you two are on your way to becoming a confident team. There are ups and downs when training a green horse, and there are times where you do need to play defense a little. The most important thing is to keep the horse moving forward and thinking about what you're asking. It sounds like you have a great trainer to work with that is understanding of a green horse.

LOVE how you are working him so open and from your leg. Don't know Dean but lucky you to find a coach / trainer who has such a nice idea of the basics and who you can work with.

Yes Dean is AMAZING. If only I had the funds to send Rex to him for a month or two... oh Rexy would be well on his way! LOL

I look at the photos from our last ride together before he hurt his leg and I dont see the defensive posture and know that confidence will come back quickly (http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._4892955_n.jpg from May 23).

Thanks everyone. Plan on many more updates now that we are getting back into the swing of things. Hopefully you guys wont mind many more pics! lol
