Default Pics of ME Riding Sexy Rexy.. Finally

So I finally got on the beast. Dean has been on him twice, the last time the day before Thanksgiving, and I lunged him once after that, but with the holidays and then vacation for a week, I just havent had time. I made myself ride BOTH horses today as the rest of the week is not looking so good (very windy, highs in the 40s... and it was almost 80 a couple of days ago).

So here are some pics from videos (gotta work on making the clips smaller so I can upload some video) that my wonderful husband took. Rex was wonderful. Though I def made this ride MUCH more difficult physically than it needed to be. I had ordered new stirrup leathers for Rexs saddle and they are the "webber" type but are real leather. Well they are a PITA to get through the hole in the stirrups which makes them a little unstable and by the time I realized it, I was already trotting. The first oh 10 mins or so, Rex will fling his head and try not to steer and basically try to bluff me and see if he can get away with it. Once he realizes Im not going anywhere, he stops. So I def did not want to stop while he was testing me to adjust the stirrups. Oh well! I also am going to use my mattes pad next ride to help lift the front of the saddle up a tad until he fills out his topline more too.

*PS* Before anyone says anything, I have never lunged with the stirrups down before but this was a single occassion. A few comments on it on TOB but trust me, Ive never done it before and this was a unique situation.

Kinda funny.. looks like a neon lunge line

He is a really lovely horse. Seems like a great boy to be so good if he hasn't been ridden much lately. Congrats!

    He's lovely!

I don't think there is anything wrong with lunging with the stirrups down. I do it all the time, it's one of the things I expect my horse to be able to deal with.

Ditto about the stirrups. You dont want them to freak if you lose one!

    You both look great

    And, how is Layla?

Well on TOB some were expressing concerns about the stirrups hitting the elbows and causing injuries, etc? I dunno. I normally run them up but sometimes they fall down while lungeing. And I mean I agree they need to get used to that stuff flying around. When I started him, I did work him with them down to get used to that. Anyways!

Thanks guys again for your great comments. I hope that I can keep more regular updates coming to track his training now that we are cleared for work.

Layla is doing really good. Rode her before I rode Rex that day. Shes feeling pretty good as I have her on Pentosan now. Im just keeping her in shape and enjoying riding her.

Thanks Lark. I am so blessed to have him. I never thought I would be able to have a horse like him.

Mega, he is by Routinier (Oldenburg) out of a tb mare. He has a full sister who is two.

Closing my hand is one of my biggest problems though.. esp my left hand!

A friend of mine has a big red Routinier mare who could be Rex's twin. (minus the white). They are both lovely in very similar ways, build, movement and temperament. Very cool

You both look fabulous! Can't wait to see you guys at a show!

edited to add: You know those guys over on TOB. everything is a worst case scenario. Hitting his elbows? Really?? I usually run mine up, but if it comes down, the inside one shows how balanced he is when it doesn't swing around, and the outside one - well, it wouldn't hit his elbow anyway.....

Oh do you think you could ask her to share some pics? I love seeing siblings and how they are progressing, etc.

Yeh I usually run mine up and will fold the long part of the stirrup forward and then loop it back over and use the excess leather that goes in the leather keeper on the saddle to secure it. But when I dont do that, sometimes they fall down. Ive never had an issues but I dont do it a lot.

Def cant wait to see you at a show too! Your boy looks like so much fun! We will have to trade rides for a day!

I will ask her. She is (rightfully) very proud of her mare so I am sure she would. If you do the Facebook thing that might be easiest; she has lots of FB friends. I'll ask her and PM you.
