    Default Spinoff: training with treats

Can anyone tell me why some people are so pleased with themselves for not using food when training? It's almost like a status symbol or something.

I think there's an idea that a dog (or any animal) who is working for food isn't really working for the handler. So a dog who learns just based on praise is really doing it out of respect/love/fear/whatever of the handler, while a dog who gets treats is just doing it for the food. The people I have known who believe that seem to think they have a better relationship with their animals than people who use treats.

I think that's rather silly on several levels, but that's the rationale I've seen.
