Best and worst horse scenes in movies
I watched the Ring today with a friend and hated the scene with the horse on the ferry. It was awful and seemed un-needed.
Which scenes do you like best? (Or hate the most?)

the one I hate the most is the scene in the movie "The Misfits" with Clark Gable and M. Monroe where they are chasing the mustangs with a plane and the truck with the tires. Shows them roping the horses and when they are tired out, tying them down to the ground to be picked up the next day to be made into dog food. It's absolutely horrifying and even more horrifying is that that is how they did it in those days (early 60s) and no doubt these horses from the movie went to that horrible end, just to make a movie scene. Hey, in their case it was a "win-win"
Favorite scene? Hmmm.
Regarding the Ring, why did Naomi Watts not walk away from the horse when it started getting agitated from her being there?

The scene in The Man from Snowy River where he and the horse go hell-bent down the ravine. I think part of it's in slow motion. It's been years since I watched it, but I have that image implanted in my memory. Also, the gorgeous cinematography in the Black Stallion when Kelly Reno is galloping him down the beach.

Oh yeah, I forgot that scene from MFSR, love it! Just blasts off the edge without slowing.

I hated that scene in The Ring with a passion that's hard to describe. But that could be because I take my horses on the ferry boat on a regular basis and that just gave me a great visual for one of my worst case scenarios.
On a random side note, my vet was the vet on hand for filming that scene.

Most hated: Dreamer - the entire movie.
I loved all the horse scenes in LOTR trilogy. Hard to choose a favorite.

AGREE!!!!
I also love the MFSR scene when they are going downhill. Another one of my favorite movie scenes is in Seabiscuit when Red is galloping him through the countryside! Just gorgeous!!!!

Some dumb girl & horse movie with Don Johnson. OMG! Horse is colicing. Let's not call the vet. Let's just have the girl devotedly stay with the horse as it lies in its stall "suffering", while the great horseman sits in his office and drinks. Then the horse jumps up the next morning good as new.
Best - the lovely cinematography for the 1st half of the Black Stallion movie.
The steeplechase scenes in "Champion."
Corny, but that lovely black saddlebred in Gypsy Colt (same horse that played Fury in the TV series).
And of course, the equitation class scenes in Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit where most of the riders had independent seats and following hands, instead of the modern sprawl on the neck crest release.

I love the final race scene in the Black Stallion I (as well as the early beach scenes) and the scene in BS II when he is following the girl on the white Arabian. Actually, BS II has lots of great scenes - also like the one where Alec rescues/steals The Black and they escape from the compound.

The scene in True Lies where Schwartzenneger steals the police horse to chase the bad guys and ends up in a fancy hotel, jumping (a la eventer) thru the fountain and riding up the glass elevator is great!
Also I LOVE the scene in Lord of the Rings where Arwen (Liv Tyler) has a passed-out Frodo in front of her and is running away from some bad guys is amazing. I definitely saw some flying lead changes. First movie, one of the first scenes.

Love:
The Man from Snowy River down-the-cliff scene. Also love the horses galloping through snow during the chase.
The scene in Ladyhawke when the hero rides the Friesian down the cathedral aisle. SWOON!!!! (Over the horse, of course. Don't even remember the hero's name. The horse was Goliath. )
Hate:
Dreamer. The whole movie, as stated.
Secretariat. (Seriously? All of them including the secretary dancing and jigging while bathing this race-fit racehorse??? To name just one eye-roller.)

Ahhh yes, Moondance Alexander. The whole movie is a bad horse scene!

That was one of the more cringeworthy moments in the movie, but there are a lot that I really like: like the slow motion shot profile of him closing in on the finish line with race calls playing, and that scene from the Belmont just before he turned toward home, where you just see the empty rail and then he thunders home.

Lord of the Rings with the Andalusians.
Black Beauty when he gets his shoes. Too funny.
Just about any scene in Seabiscuit.
And it's cheesy, but I LOVE Dreamer. Really fun movie.

That's got to be one of my favourites.

Also love the show jumping scene with Aberali and Kathy Kusner playing "Aspercel" and rider.

This was horrible - I like this movie but it's so sad.
Love the Black Stallion I and Seabiscuit when he is just running out in the country - re-learning how to be a horse.
I really hate watching some of the older movies - before it was pc not to hurt the animals.

Well, if this thread was favorite horse scenes in "non-horsey" movies, I'd choose a scene from A Christmas Carol, the George C. Scott version. It's in the section with the Ghost of Christmas Past, where Old Scrooge is watching all the young people pass and several of the boys are on ponies. There's a grey (white) pony in that group that looks just like my first pony.
For horse movies, I guess I'd pick just about any scene from Seabiscuit. I love that movie!
