At one of the farms where I used to work, you could either walk 500 yards out of your way, get off, unlatch the annoyingly small gate which you couldn't reach on horseback, go through the gate, latch the gate, somehow get back on from the ground, and go on your way... or you could cut through the hay barn, duck a little, and save 7 minutes and the pain in the neck of handling a fractious young horse. We all cut through the hay barn. One time, riding an older horse, one of my friends did dismount this way. He did a couple of chin-ups on the rafter beam. He thought it was great fun and nobody died.
