i'm in school (and should be studying right now http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_smile.gif) so i don't have time to read all 28 pages of this, but i have read enough to want to make some comments.
first of all, this is a very sad situation, and ultimately i feel badly for the horse who did not ask to be at a place where she is not liked. horses pick up on those vibes and it isn't going to do her any good in the long run.
second, cribbing is NOT the end of the world, and no horse should be sent to the killers just for that...even if the statement was made in frustration, that's still no excuse for even bringing it up.
lastly, i own a TB that i got off the track at 6 yrs old. he was a cribber then, and now at 19 yrs young, he's retired and....yes, still a cribber. but you know what? he took me from training level to intermediare and taught me so much, i can never repay him. what i have been able to do is give him a wonderful life and now he's the granpa of my farm....still cribs on the stall door, but who does that really bother? i think replacing the piece of wood on the top of the door every now and then is a small price to pay for all the years of training he gave me.
he eats off a rubber bucket on the ground or he'd crib on his feed bucket. the water bucket is low enough that he can't get a good 'crib' hold on it, and he's in a field with electric tape around the top of the fence line so he can't crib on the fence. and oh yeah, he raises my foals....they never picked it up. even one colt's mother was a wood chewer (in my opinion more damaging than cribbing since) and he never started that either.
if you take away the places to crib, turn the horse out and let her relax a bit, you may just find this to be less of a problem than you originally thought. if she's what you want in every other respect, don't you think it's worth a try? you may just be saying she's the best horse you ever had 20 years from now.
if you can't bring yourself to get past this with the horse, do the right thing and sell her or give her to one of the generous posters here that have offered to take her off your hands.

OMG! Can TWO people in this world REALLY be this dense?? Please tell me they're related -- I'll sleep a lot better knowing this is an anomoly from 1 set of genes. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...n_rolleyes.gif

quote:
Originally posted by Cartier:
Dancing Lawn,
Is this really the direction you want this thread to go? You seem determined to twist and inflame this. I think Talloaks point about the Inspection is that putting one on (and hers is amazing by any standard), involves self-less hours of uncompensated work for the benefit of others. IF you want to dispute that, go right ahead. But what is your ultimate point?

I do believe her point is that TO used the inspection to try to gather pity because she was "busy doing charity work" and therefore that's the reason she took a chance and didn't get the horse vetted. AFter all, she's a good person who does "charity" work. Sorry... DL wasn't biting and I'm not either. TO is not the victim here and her excuses are getting tired.

quote:
In 27 pages here is what is true.
Talloaks purchased a Canter rescue horse because she believed that it was sound with no issues (which is basically how the mare was advertised).

Not exactly. TO purchased a Canter ADVERTISED horse from an unknown seller, did not head the warnings of CANTER specifically with regards to the prepurchase and now when the horse is not everything she ASSUMED it to be, she is trying to blame everyone else when there is no one to blame but herself.

quote:
For those who are asserting that buyers should never trust the word of track people … how does that help Canter or any person [organization] place these OTTB?

The same as it would when I buy ANYTHING -- animal or electronic. Especially when someone (ie: CANTER) gives me advice about how to proceed into a world that I am unfamiliar with. Barring that, *I* have enough sense in my mere 10 years aroudn horses to know that I need someone with some knowledge in said world to help me. TO is obviously too impressed with her how ego to get that statement. And it helps to have such advice/warnings to avoid these exact types of situations!! But I guess the old saying is true -- You can't idiot proof everything because there will always be a better idiot.

quote:
Talloaks is the buyer you would all want to reach (as are we).

Sorry... but not only no but HELL NO!! Not after her rants and tirades on this thread. I would sell her a dead dog!

quote:
A few of you posted that Talloaks has ruined her reputation… that is silly, her reputation is that of a credible breeder who’s word can be trusted. I would do business with her in a heart beat.

See paragraph above... as well as the numerous posts that have reiterated the same message. Remember, bad news travels 10 times faster than good news.

quote:
But what on earth do you think you all have done for Canter’s reputation?

Boy that is a silly question comeing from someone who pages ago was first in line to totally slam and defame CANTER. What have we done? Hmmm... supported, defended, heralded and reiterated the organization's purpose, warnings and procedures. Let's see... 2 or 3 people defending TO's attitude... 20 or 30 defending CANTER's procedures? Even *I* can see what those numbers say.
BTW, If I were you, I'd be less worried about defending TO's reputation and more concerned with my own after a few of the posts you've made.

quote:
Somewhere on this thread someone posted the link to Hay Market, the Canter page with the original ad for her. It very much appeared to me that Canter was involved in the placement of Hay Market.

Ok, ONE MORE TIME... and please pay attention, I'm sure we're all tired of reading this over and over just so you can get a clue ... yes, canter places the ads on their website. Yes, they collect the information they are given. But NO, as per their FAQ, they are NOT INVOLVED! They are a newspaper who lists classifieds... they are COTH... they are the trading post... they are equine.com... whatever... they are NOT responsible for what the BUYER needs to do to complete the sale in a reasonable and responsible fashion for them! Do you get it YET!?!?

quote:
So let me offer this, IF buyers could have some sense that what is posted about a Canter horse is accurate then more people like Talloaks and myself might be willing to give these horses a try.

God help those horses. http://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...n_rolleyes.gif

quote:
And if Canter had popped up here and said something like, “Hey, the experience Talloaks had is NOT what we endorse or promote, we will get back to this seller and ask that they be more forth coming in the future” then I would have respect for Canter.

But the problem with that would be that THEN CANTER would be involved and therefore responsible for the ads. THEY AREN'T. How many times do you have to hear that?

quote:
IF we all take a few steps back here… this situation is analogous to the placement of rescue dogs in the following ways:

Again, it is not a valid analogy. CANTER is NOT a rescue for the Trainer listed horses. They are a newspaper... a free classified. Remember (as I think I mentioned in page ... well, it was back in the single digits), CANTER stands for COMMUNICATION Alliance to NETWORK Thoroughbred ExRacehorses. Get it now, Cartier?? They provide teh communication between trainers and prospective buyers that would otherwise not have access to the track backside. END OF FREAKIN' STORY! They do NOT place horses. My best friend from High School has worked with the local Great Dane Rescues for years now. They DO place dogs. THEY are a rescue. They take applications... do home visits... do turn down based on certain criteria. CANTER does NONE of these things. Oh, and THEY (GD rescue) gets the money the new owner pays for teh dogs! CANTER DOES NOT!!! It si NOT a rescue, they have NO liability or responsibilty to EITHER party and have done a PHENOMINAL job of helping trainers find prospective buyers and buyers find horses to look at. Call me a CANTER fanatic if you want, but I've met JoAnne Normile before (uh, that's CANTER's founder for those who may be on the dense side) and she is a great woman who has done something VERY positive. And it will remain positive despite the likes of TO and Cartier.
For someone who has shown dogs for 25 years, Cartier, I would THINK you could understand the 2 types of organizations are NOT the same.

For all of you so called do gooders who want to buy or get a free horse from this thread---you had better first read the rules of the COTHBB. This thread is NOT SELLING NOT GIVING AWAY A OTTB. PERIOD. For all of the so called intelligence you all claim to have, certainly you have read the COTHBB rules about no sales or advertising permitted.
Also, I would NEVER EVER let this lovely little mare go to any of you who have posted derogatory comments about me, my farm, husband, trainer or horses, on this thread. So don't bother asking and you are not welcome at my farm.
As far as I am concerned about you all with the big mouths you can go and P---up a rope and suck the wet end!!!

TO isn't the only one who's ROYALLY PO'D right now.
I just came in, from working all day in the remains of my blasted barn, repairing all the damage from my REAL charity work, in saving all those mares and foals. In return, I get one destroyed barn, bruises, cuts, scrapes, blisters and various other aches and pains. I am in such a fowl temper right now, that I could smash things with my bare hands, except there's nothing left to smash.
So, I would REALLY like to know, just how TO gets off calling volunteering at an inpsection "charity" work.
And if you think that taking in one little tb mare and then whining about it is doing a rescue, then think again, sweetheart, compared to all the other people who happily volunteer their time, money, and energy, you are nowhere.

talloaks -- I really don't understand why you would say that you would never sell your lovely little mare to anyone who posted on this thread.
Speaking for myself, and I'm sure for others who have posted similar sentiments, I certainly didn't get make an offer to look at your horse because I was eager to flaunt the COTHBB rules by shopping for a horse in the context of a thread (heck, until reading this post, I wasn't shopping for a new horse, and believe me when I tell you that my hubby was probably less thrilled then the moderator 'cause I'm at quota!). I have also not said a word against you throughout this exchange, and don't know why you would dismiss me as a potential home for this horse without even speaking to me.
I made a legitimate offer to look at the horse as a purchase prospect simply because you expressed such dismay with your transaction, and appeared to be pretty eager to move this animal down the road. In fact, you have variously said that:
- You wanted to return the horse to the seller
- Your husband (and I believe, your trainer) wanted this horse off your property ASAP
- You asked if anyone would be willing buy this horse from you (or, at least, that's how I understood your statement in the posting about the vet results)
I won't even include your reference to the meat market in this list, because I assume you didn't really mean that...
I made an honest offer to look at a horse that you apparantly do not want. If I liked her, and you agreed that I was a satisfactory buyer, I would have vetted her since I don't know enough about OTTBs to know what's really worrisome, and what's likely to resolve itself with rest, ample turn-out and TLC. I love all my animals, and give them a happy home (you would be more then welcome to visit to see for yourself).
I just don't understand why you would be so rude to me and others who have just tried to help you resolve this situation.

I see we're back. The thread disappeared for a while!
My last post was rather harsh. So, I'm sorry. And this of course is going to come out all wrong, and sound wrong, too, but once I've had a glass of port and a piece of chocolate, I'll calm down a bit. It's been a very tough week.

At least none of those GENUINE do-gooders (as opposed to posers such as yourself) would EVER threaten to take a less than perfect horse to a MEAT AUCTION. Wow, how old are you Talloaks?
I've kept out of this for many pages, but that was just too much.
I'm really glad you think so much of yourself, that you will condemn that mare to a life with people who hate her, rather then give her a shot at a better life.
Quick question, if cribbing drops a horse's value down to only a few hundred dollars, are YOU going to disclose it? From your behavior here, I highly doubt it.
I feel for this horse, and I do have a distinct feeling this poor little girl is in for far worse then what Talloaks "rescued" her from http://chronicleforums.com/images/cu...milies/cry.gif

I am really at a loss here as to why this thread has remained open, as much of a train wreck as it has turned into, but when I posted about a mare that I broke and galloped every day who now is up for sale for $600 and must go ASAP, and isn't sound and hasn't had vet attention it was ereased immidiatly. I sent both SoEasy and Erin a very polite email about it, as well as IM's but have yet to hear from them.... (and this is not to harp on the Mods, I respect their opinion and final say so, I was just looking for an explaination. The Mods here on COTH do a great jobhttp://chronicleforums.com/groupee_c...icon_smile.gif OK, back to our regularly scheduled train wreck....

I think they were probably keeping it open in hopes that talloaks would take one of the other posters up on their offers to buy the mare. But, it seems that talloaks is not willing to do that, do her own and to the poor mare's detriment. The situation is beyond pathetic and the loser is Hay Worthy. I cannot type what I'm feeling.
