Default Weird race wreck at Woodbine........

what are the odds of a father going down in a race and wiping out two of his sons? Odds are probably pretty high but it happened: Joe Hudon Jr's horse went down and took down two other horses, one driven by son Phil and the other by son Pat.

Are they always called racebikes nowadays instead of sulkies?

They have been bikes as long as I can remember; sulky was only used in the media and catalogues. Bike came into common usage in this area eons ago and have never heard a horseman refer to a sulky except for the old, highwheeled contraptions. Race bike or just bike derived from bicycle wheeled sulky to differentiate from the wooden wheeled type and shortening the term came about pretty quickly as I understand it.

I saw this last night while checking out Woodbine results.......incredible.

It's rare the Hudon's drive in the same race.

They had posts 1,3, and 8 in this 8 horse field.

At no time in the race are they together, however, when dad goes down near the finish......amazingly, the spill takes his sons with him.

    Here's the replay:

Everyone has cuts and bruises.......but, all in all, they're OK.

Here's another freakish race from yesterday:

Thursday, November 10, 2011 - by John Manzi

Monticello, NY --- The 12th race at Monticello Raceway on Thursday November 10 was declared a “no contest” when the Docdor Chaser got stuck to the mobile starting gate.

According to Scott Hamilton, the starting judge, Docdor Chaser’s top teeth got stuck in a bar of the mobile starting gate and the pacer couldn’t get free as the wings began to fold which caused Hamilton to reopen the wings and slow down so the horse could become unattached. But in doing so the start of the race was interfered with.

“Not only have I never seen this before, I never even heard of it happening,” Hamilton said. “I know the horse (Docdor Chaser) from Saratoga and he always has his head on the gate but somehow this time his top teeth got over one of the rungs in the wing and he couldn’t get free.

thanks for the link to the race, laserRob. Going to watch it after I do my chores. I must admit, the only reason I read the SC article so closely is I know the Hudons and Joe is too old to bounce very good now and had wondered if he was hurt. Was shocked to see he took down his own kids!!!
