Never even knew they were pets!?!

They don't seem very cuddly with all the thorns?

Awww. I like hedgehogs! I think they're neat, but its just never been the right time to add one to the zoo.

There used to be a poster with the handle scheherazade (or some variation of that) who bred hedgehogs! I haven't seen her around lately, though--not sure if she changed her name or went away...

What are they like as pets? I've never known anyone who had one, and actually I don't think I've ever seen one other than in pictures.

I love hedgehogs, but have never had one. They are illegal in a number of states, so I think that cuts down on the number of people who have them.

I had one about 10 years ago. I loved her! She loved to eat cottage cheese as a treat. They are not cuddly but very cute. I used to hold her all the time. She was very sweet. You must post pics!

A cousin of mine just got one and oh is it cute! If I remember I'll post links to pictures. It's some pygmy or dwarf version.

It looks like they are only illegal to keep in six states, NYC and Omaha. Odd assortment.

Your link did some really strange things to my computer... May I suggest you find a different link to share/remove the one above?
And this is the story of your red right ankle.

I got my first one in 2008! I actually won her in a Black Friday raffle at a petshop up in NY. I knew nothing about hedgehogs but looked for any and all info I could find on them when I entered the raffle. I got to pick her out and she was by far the best hedgehog ever. I named her Finley and she was so so so sweet! She would come out of her house when I would call her name and she loved to come out and explore. Unfortunately about a year later she developed cancer (Albino hedgies are prone to it). We kept her comfortable for a few months before she passed away. I miss her

My parents bought me another one for Christmas in 2009. This one was a "pinto" one. She was from a terrible breeder and came to us with mites and a slight jaw deformity. Despite all the correct socialization and handling, Toes is a grumpy little thing. Anytime you get near her cage she balls up and hisses at you. I can take her out and sit with her, but any movement what so ever and she's back in her hissy little ball. She is the complete opposite of Finley.
    Toes:

They are great pets if you are willing to put the time into socializing them. They could end up like Finley and adore attention or they could end up like Toes and want nothing to do with you. It's a risk you have to be willing to take. They def. aren't for everyone.

Also, if anyone is looking to get one, make sure you do a lot of research. Their cage temp needs to be at least 70 degrees, preferably somewhere around 75 degrees. Anything lower than that and they will go into hibernation which can kill them.

I assisted in a hedgehog surgery once.
Of course his name was Sonic. He was cute, but he had osteosarcoma and didnt make it. We sewed him up and returned him to his little boy to bury.

Huh? I've tried it on three different computers, with three different browsers and absolutely nothing odd happened. Totally up to date virus and scumware software.

Link worked fine for me too, I even clicked around on it for a while (I'm on a mac).

My good friend had a hedgehog for about a year. She was a fantastic little thing, very friendly, loved to hang out and crawl around with us.

I live in PA and I had one about 16 years ago. Shhh - apparently Edgar was illegal.

He was a sweet little guy. Not too cuddly but he did like to sit on the couch and watch tv.

And hanging out, I had just woken up, I don't generally look stupid.

They are still illegal in a few states but starting to get more available in most areas, There were two USDA breeders within two hours of us. Like Milocalwinnings said they are fairly finicky, especially regarding temperature, there is also some great info on the hedgehog forums if anyone is thinking of getting one.

She gets grumpy when you first pick her up but soon uncurls and loves to explore. She reminds me of a mouse wearing a prickle suit.

mildot- Not super cuddly but they are only prickly when upset or startled, when they are relaxed they will lay their quills down.

Milocalwinnings- such cute hedgies! looks like you had fun with them.
