    Default Question about coggins

Does anyone know if the coggins have to be drawn in the new calendar year? my horse had his done in february and the vet is coming this month so we are thinking about just doing it now. Is that okay?

    Thanks!!

We have ours pulled in December and we never have a problem with the following show year, so go ahead if it's convenient.

Default Depends on where you are

Some states require a cog gins from calendar year (I.e. WI). Some within last 12 months.

And some shows (not the norm) require one within six months! We always do ours in early spring as then we're pretty much covered no matter what since we rarely (if ever) show past October.

the actual law varies by state. This is old, but you may be able to find an updated version: http://asci.uvm.edu/equine/law/eia/eia.htm

You can see here that Michigan used to have a calendar year law, but has now changed to a 12 month law: http://www.mlive.com/news/kalamazoo/...tive_cogg.html

Some venues require coggins within six months, so read the omnibus carefully (or prizelist, boarding contract etc), but you are most often good if it is within 12 months, but do check your own state's law as well as the requirements of the venue if for competition.
OTTBs rule, but spots are good too!

In NY the coggins are good until Dec 31 of the year after it is drawn, so a coggins drawn this year is good until Dec 31, 2012 within the state. Crossing state lines means different rules.
