I need some advice about starting out in endurance riding.
Horse: 17 year old TB cross with some Arab in his bloodlines. Lower level Eventer and Dressage horse. 16.2 hands. Successful Hunter Pace Horse-loves it. Excellant health, has always had the best in vet and hoof care. Great feet. Clean x-rays 2 years ago. Goes best in English Hackamore, very quiet on trails. Trail rides average 10 miles over varied terrain.
Enjoys Hunter Paces more than anything else
Setting for training: 600 acres former dairy farm in central NC. 15 miles of trails, varied terrain, plenty of pastures to condition in, cross country course, hosts 3 hunter paces per year.
Do you see many TB in endurance? Endurance has alway applealed to me. How should I train for a 25 mile ride to start?
I 2nd Painted Horse's suggestion to go volunteer at a ride. You will learn tons about the sport in a relaxed way so that you won't be anxious or worried about what to do when you are actively competing.
There are lots of Thoroughbreds in this sport - the ones I've seen have been (or actively still are) foxhunters or eventers. Lots of Tb-Arab x's too.
There is a great link in the stickies (top of the forum) from gothedistance on how to start riding endurance. Check it out - it will give you everything you need including tips and suggestions.
