Were the horses confiscated by Animal Control or not ? Horses have to be in very rough shape before AC or the local Humane Society will remove them.

look folks, i live in teh same community as Gwen. I have NEVER heard a bad word about her EVER.

yes, she was in the olympics many years ago... she is also still a trainer, rider etc. she is still well respected etc.

    sheesh.

you all had better hope someone doenst have a vendetta out for you.... this kind of thing is very damaging.

and while i do not know the whole story, i do know that old horses can lose weight rapidly, and that we have had some CRAZY weather... my own well fed horses lost a ton of weight over the last month....

please please PLEASE wait for the FACTS before going down this well trodden road.

my barn does rescues and works with CHANGE - the change vet is our barn vet. i have not heard anythign about GS at all.

and... were teh horses confiscated or given away?

just to make this more personal - here is a picture of gwen:

ROFLMAO!!! I know - let's feed them the trolls lurking here! And hope that they bring their appetite as well as their attorneys to finish off any leftovers.

Careless slander/libel on the basis of "say so" versus credible sources is NOT a defense. If this turns out to be a publicity stunt - I hope someone (or several) get FRIED on their own burners.

Gwen has been a very solid citizen of our horse community... well loved by many.

i think we need to wait and see what the DA says before crucifying her.

I also live in the Bay Area and have had some dealings with the trainer who wrote the article.

    What mbm said.

Thanks for causing me a minor age related freak out...1980 was 30 years ago. Whew, I'm not getting that old!

The other thing that is confusing me about this whole story is that allegedly Sonoma County Animal Control picked up these horses in Willits... which is in Mendocino County and probably 2 hours from their home base.

But I agree. Sad all the way around and I don't think anyone involved in any aspect of this is sounding great. And the use of examiner.com to make the article seem like it was from a newspaper is creepy.

I read it and went "I'm not 40, and was born before 1980..."

Right. But even if you are totally blameless in your 28YO horse turning to skin and bones overnight don't you lose points for giving that horse away? I mean really. If your 28YO horse turns to skin and bones overnight despite all your best efforts to care for him, isn't it time to put him down?

(I have a 23YO. I watch him like a hawk for signs of trouble. He will not be going to a new home.)

It's interesting that on the Off Course thread on this topic, there are a few people who say they aren't surprised by poor condition of the horse(s).

So, think about how YOU would feel if people were doing this to you. Stop gossiping. I find this really offensive, too. I know someone who used to be in here who used to put up these kind of things who was a psychopath and caused a lot of destruction.

    Stop it.

I really REALLY hope that this is just some publicity stunt by some desperate writer because it's so horrible to think that there is a chance this is a reality. If it is a publicity stunt then I hope that they get their asses chewed, fired and are never allowed to publish such damaging stories on the internet again. I was hoping someone with first hand knowledge could clarify yes or no as to whether this was true to either squash it or confirm it but it seems as if we're all at a loss. The article seemed a bit suspicious to me with the explanation points as I can't say I've ever read a legitimate article in the newspaper that included exclamation points! I guess we'll just have to wait to see what the outcome is when some hard facts by a more legitimate source are posted since the current sources are most definitely questionable.

I agree. Surely they could be sued for slander? That's an absolutely terrible and completely irresponsible thing to publish without confirming the truth of it.

    REALLY?????

Here's a scenario for you: I sold a lovely mare to a breeding establishment in April a few years back. I went to the farm, all of the horses were in excellent weight, a few probably 7s on the scale , but not a single malnourished horse. Woman was fairly well known in community with good reputation for horse care.

Fast forward FOUR (4) months (not years, months!) and the new owner calls me because mare is colicing and she wasn't happy with her vet. I immediately rush over - mare is FREAKIN SKIN AND BONES. I could count every one of her verterbra. It was ludicrous.

I called my vet, we got mare straightened out, vet gave woman a lecture on how TBs are not Arabs and have to be cared for differently. We were able to get everything straightened out and mare now is in much better shape.

BUT my point is - you can do your due diligence in finding a "good" home and take all the precautions, but once you no longer own a horse, there is often little you can do legally about it.

Edited to add: my point was also that if the new owner hadn't contacted me, I never may have discovered the condition this mare had fallen into. (forgetfulness happens when I post before coffee).

So stop pointing fingers until you have the whole story.

There are certainly enough glitches in this one - which is posted in anything BUT a credible news source by someone who is hardly a reliable journalist - to create more than a Reasonable Doubt.

Sheesh - may everyone who is so willing to point fingers be blessed by the same actions of their peers.
