    Default Can't get Pennfield anymore...

and my older guy is losing weight again. He has COPD so his basic metabolic requirements are quite high. I starting feeding him Pennfield after reading recommendations here on COTH. He does quite well on it but now my local store doesn't carry it. He is a picky eater and, while he does okay on Purina Senior, he stops eating it after awhile.

My schedule and barn setup doesn't permit soaking beet pulp, hay cubes and the like and I'd prefer not to feed rice bran because of the problems it can cause.

Does someone have suggestions for a commercial feed?

And, yes, he is current on vet care.

    Thanks!

Ugh. I'd be very upset if I couldn't get Pennfield.

My next choice would be Triple Crown, especially the Senior.

I had a COPD horse and fed her TC senior or TC complete. If they won't soak hay you can feed her TC Complete as a total feed, no hay required.

I'd also not feed a COPD horse non soaked hay, that can seriously reduce his life span.

I'm disappointed I can't get the Pennfield, believe me! He does really well on it.

However, I can get Triple Crown if that is an good alternative. I guess I'll try that.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

can you add non-soaked beet pulp? My horse did fine with adding beet pulp that wasnt soaked. he's fine no issues.

Yes the TC Senior is an excellent alternative! Glad you have access to it!

Where are you located in VA? Tri-County (Marshall) sells it as does Clifton Saddlery (Clifton). If neither of those are in your area, would it be possible to find out who the nearest dealer is then try to find one of their clients (barns) closest to you and buy your feed from their client?

I previously drove through Marshall for work all the time then changed jobs. (I love Tri-County). I thought about driving up there and getting 10 or 20 bags but then storage becomes an issue.

My local store changed ownership and doesn't have enough Pennfield customers to justify ordering it. The nearest store that carries it is 40 minutes away. I was making the trip but then I got a batch with grain mites and it was too much trouble to try and return it and get more.

If Triple Crown is a good alternative, I can certainy give it a try.

    Thanks for the suggestions!
