    Default Fruit Flies?

I have fruit flies in my apartment and they are so annoying. How do I get rid of them? I have no food out on the counters, my trash is clean, litter boxes are clean. What do I do?

They eat yeast - from rotting fruit, whatever. Alcohol as well. You can make traps - take an open mouthed jar, create a paper funnel if you don't have a real one, put some cheap beer or wine in the jar. They'll be attracted to the alcohol and won't be able to get out.

I have heard that they actually live/reproduce in the kitchen drain, and pouring some boiling water and baking soda down there should help clear it up.

saultgirl-I've heard that also. Make sure you run hot water in all of the drains, and espeically concentrate on ones that aren't used too often. And if you have a garbage disposal take the rubber part out of the neck, scrub it with a soapy brush on all sides, and clean the garbage disposal out also by scrubbing it thoroughly, rinse well and put the rubber piece back.

You can also put a small jar or bowl of apple cider vinegar and dish soap on your counter. The vinegar attracts them and the dish soap keeps them from getting out.

I`ve also heard of leaving half a glass of wine on a counter, covered in Saran wrap. Use a toothpick to poke holes in the wrap, and they will be more than happy to go into it!

But won't the wine taste funny with fruit flies in it?

PS buy the cheapest beer and wine. They actually prefer it. When we set up large population cages for experiments, we make up a yeast paste of yeast and the stuff that comes in a box, and they love it.
