Which do you guys prefer? Obviously a box stall is going to cost more, but do you find its really worth it for the horse? My horse is pretty good with trailering but gets a bit nervous. However, he also isn't really a big fan of stalls, so...yeah. Thanks!

Btw, we're talking about a 12ish hour trip.

I love box stalls. My horse is more relaxed on long trips in a box stall. Some horses get nervous and pace around. It really depends on the horse. For my horse it is worth spending the extra money.

Depends on the length of the trip, and the size of your wallet. I think the horses generally always appreciate the extra comfort of a box stall.

One thing to consider, though you have a much shorter trip...I have a friend who shipped a fairly young horse from west coast to east; she got him a box stall and he apparently paced around for a lot of the trip and dropped a bunch of weight. They were not on the road 24/7; had a layover or two; she said she thought she was doing the horse a favor, but....not so sure! For 12 hours, you might want to consider a stall and 1/2 if he gets nervous...Enough room to shift around.

I just this minute booked travel for my 4 year old on a 13-14 hour trip. I'm spending extra to get her a box stall. She's a big girl and I thought it was worth the extra money.

I think someone above might be slightly confused. A stall and a half is not the same as a box stall. I'd always go for a stall and a half (never just a stall - eep!!!). Unless money wasn't an object. A lot of companies will put them in a box stall if they have the room, even if you didn't ask for it, and not charge you extra.

But * we did order box stalls on Creech Brothers vans and they made them one and a half times the normal size ... sized for broodmare and colt ....did not fabricate this really... was expensive but safe and worth the added expense.

I've actually been looking at Creech, and they're sizes are single stall, stall and 1/2, and box stall. So stall and 1/2 and box stall are not the same.

Two different ways to ship -- tie stall or box stall
Box stall can be made larger in the same idea
As a one and a half tie stall..
Just saying in past years when we were shipping
mares with colts from Midwest to KY
they had the additional option of over sized
box stall .... For mare and colt traveling
loose.
Perhaps that option has been deleted from the
shipping menu but that is what we used and for
that specified reason.

I just shipped my horse from the Midwest to East Coast in a box stall. The box stall was $200 more than a stall and a half. My horse is not an experienced shipper, and this seemed a small price to pay for a little more comfort and safety on a long trip. It was definitely worth it to me. I'm glad I did it that way.

My filly arrived here (Wi) from central CA in great condition and she rode in a single stall the whole trip - no stop overs, except for gas and a few couple hour breaks. She's never traveled before. Driver had a camera system set up to keep an eye on his cargo, horses were NOT tied so they could lower their heads to eat, and had plenty of water at all times. Highly recommend Competition Equine Transport for long distances!

I'm not saying you're wrong or anything. I'm sure at one point there was something like what your talking about, or maybe there still is and they've change the names? A box stall is still loose and is required for mares and foals. The single and single and 1/2 are tied.
