I was a rider in Lord of the Rings. We did some mass galloping work like this. It was AWESOME. On one of the training days 150? of us did some drill work. In the end we were split into two groups each one horse width apart, facing each other strung out across the field. Each line had to gallop towards the other line, remaining shoulder to shoulder with the riders in our own line, passing through the gaps in the line we were galloping towards. No double ups, no crashes.

I'd do that sort of massed riding again any day. The days were really long, lots of hanging around, but it was fun and good training for my horses.

Naaah not allowed to take cameras of any sort onto the set - written into the contract, camera removed, immediate termination etc etc. I can watch the movies though!!! Can pick myself in one of them - I was one of the very few extras who didn't have a hat. My hair was shoulder length, auburn and wavy - apparently exactly as Tolkien described the riders we were playing. Make up, wardrobe and hairdressing all came to a halt when I walked in. They were so excited to do makeup and hair - and not cover it all up. I was told to keep my eyes DOWN because as I was tall, on a tall horse, I ended up a number 1 rider (ie nearest the camera) but it was clear when the camera caught my eyes that I was not a guy

Massed galloping is the most fun!!! Almost like hunting.
