    Default When Jousting Goes Bad

Sometimes even knights and squires have bad days. 1:15 into the video.

Jousting- Dangerous in the Middle Ages- Dangerous today.

Because of many crippling or fatal accidents, jousting tournaments gradually lost favor back in the day. They were outlawed by various princes and kings at various times because they didn't want their knights injured or killed when they would be needed for real combat.

Of course, after the English defeated mounted French knights with longbow archers and then guns came along, the heyday of armored knights was pretty much over.

Tournoi that featured mounted riders trying to collect suspended rings on their lances continued to be popular even in this country.

With all the Ren Fests, apparently full contact list jousting is making a comeback. There are companies of "professional" knights who travel the Ren Fest circuit to provide spectators the thrill of watching a joust.

There is a Ren Fest in Hammond, Louisiana each fall and it features mounted knights jousting. One of their company told me they got their war horses from the New Holland, PA auction, most were draft crosses or Percherons. I think being a war horse is a better fate than becoming dinner in Europe.

Impressive, and I'm glad to read in the comments that nobody was really hurt. I'd love to see jousting.

Side note: Did the sound track annoy anybody else? IMHO, a video should have EITHER talking or singing. When it attempts to have both simultaneously, it feels like an auditory tug-of-war.

    What a drag...

Seriously though, ye aulde breakaway stirrups would have prevented about half that... And a smidge of ground training for the announcer as well. The other half. Not much can prevent a well struck lance

All's well that ends well, I suppose. He hath no spur to prick the sides of his intent, only vaulting ambition which o'erleaps itself and falls on the other side.
