I don't believe in god(s). Consequently I really don't care what his/her/it's followers think when it comes to marriage, divorce, same sex relationships, abortion, end of life decisions, etc. when their religion is the sole basis for their opinions.

I'll happily stay out of their personal lives and would appreciate the same courtesy.

I know this is supposed to be a fun thread but wanted to say when I read the first Conversations with God book I felt like I had the teacher's edition of a textbook and could see that I was "right" My favorite was book 3 but if you only want to read one of them read book 1. Cliff notes version: God thinks religion is dumb too.

I have a different approach to why humans choose to believe in less than rational ideas as facts, based on what we know today thru neurobiology, how we evolved to be believers, supposedly because believers fit better in groups and cooperation is what made humans who we are today.

The trick is that today humans seem to be past needing to believe without facts, so that is an obsolete function any more and is in reality impeding cooperation as those that still follow irrational beliefs hang onto them.
"Because the Bible/Koran/whatever tells me to" should not be a valid reason any more.

This brings to mind a fun story.

My family is largely french, therefore Catholic.

My dad's aunt is...well....somewhat radical.

One of her sons and his first wife got divorced. There are children involved, of course.

Eventually he found someone who actually turned him into a decent human being, and lo and behold, they get engaged!

Mommy-dearest insists that he must get first marriage annulled before he can remarry, because he simply MUST remarry in the church!

One of the other sons questions whether she really, surely wants his brother to annull his first marriage.

Absolutely, no other option.

But that means that the first marriage never happened.

BUT... other son points out... that would make first-marriage children BASTARDS!

I wish I had been a fly on the wall for that kerfuffle. I"m not sure she ever found suitable "evidence" in the bible to the contrary, nor am I sure as to whether or not the marriage ever did actually get annulled.

So whether or not those poor children are now bastards, well, I Do not know.

But they're sure nice, well-raised examples of good citizens and people, so their biblical status matters not

So..while I believe in God, I don't believe in using God as a pawn to manipulate those around me into doing what I feel is right, nor do I base my morality on any "black and white messages" perceived in a book that has been translated so many times it's real message has been rendered obscure ;-)

BUT... it does make for some entertaining moments when observing those around me try and do so!

don't you think that if their god existed and it was really that important he/she/it could come tell me so directly, or at least send an email? although why I would care what some non-human weirdo with serious self-esteem issues (requiring all of that "worshipping") thinks is beyond me.
