    Default Lily pads

Help! How do you keep these things on? Duct tape is not working.

Are you putting them on a foundering horse? Upon whose advice?
Doesn't that raise the heel - which is not desired in founder - ie causing more toe weighting? Others that are "in the know" about this - can you explain this?

To add: Can you tape on something more level ie like construction styrofoam to cover evenly the entire bottom of the hoof?

Sorry - I don't know what you are treating.

grayarabs I am putting them on upon the advice of my vet. My mare has contracted heels and not much frog. The way it was explained to me was the lily pads will help keep the frog in contact with the ground and stimulate blood flow to it. I had never seen or heard of them until the other day. I will try the elastikon! Thanks!

    This is a lily pad:

Are you trying to apply them on a horse that is shod? I think that makes it more difficult - ask me how I know. (my horse was foundering, shod, high heels - lily pads = bad idea - I tossed them out).

I think there are better ways to accomplish frog contact. I am guessing that your horse has a hoof problem that prevents normal frog to ground contact ie high heels and/or overgrown bars. And lives/works on soft footing? Contracted hoof/heels? This can happen shod or barefoot.

Sometimes raising the heels is an essential part of treating acute laminitis and early stages of founder. Raising heels weights the HEELS more. Not the toe.
As well ,bone "rotating" type founder needs the wedge to release the tension in the deep flexor tendon and muscle, which is pulling on the bone.In those cases raising the heels stops the downward pull on the toe of the bone by the tendon, .But Sinking type founders with no rotation do NOT need a wedge. The internal mechanics are different.
That said, the OP explained er vets advice. It is not founder.

Horse is not shod and definitely has contracted heels. The lily pads do not seem to fit her well and she seems uncomfortable with them on so I took them off. My farrier didn't seem too keen on them but didn't want to contradict the vet. He said to try them for a bit and then call him about other options if they didn't help, which i will do.
