Default Paprika ok for pregnant mare?

    hey all,

So i am taking my pregnant mare to Upperville to show on the line. She will be roughly 60 days in foal at this point. She is jet black but with the sun she is starting to bleach out, and obviously i want her to be shiny and perfect in the show ring I bought her a UV/fly sheet but she just seems miserable in it and it rubbed her shoulder so i stopped putting it on her last week. I have heard rumors that Paprika helps keep coats black, but cannot find anywhere if it is safe for a pregnant mare.

    Anyone have any thoughts?

    Thanks!

Paprika will give you a bad test. I personally would not use it on a pregnant mare. Most likely it wouldn't hurt anything but I don't think it's worth taking a chance on. Turn her out at dusk and bring her in during the day.

I would try getting a different fly sheet and putting her on a supplement like Omega Horseshine. Also, turning out at night helps, so does good grooming.
I don't know if Paprika is ok for a pregnant mare (but I would guess it is), however, it will test positive on a drug test, so if there is any chance of drug testing I would stay far away.
You could also try getting one of those coat color specific shampoos.
Also, I believe they make some coat sprays that have sunscreen or something in them to help stop bleaching out.

Why would paprika test positive? Is it related chemically to a banned substance?

Not that I've ever thought of giving it to horses, just curious. I'm not a show person at all, so truly have no clue.

Paprika will test for capsicum, a forbidden substance. Judges would rather see a horse that's been curried for hours than one that has been fed or doused in something.

i brush her daily-i mean meticulously clean her. grooming is her favorite thing! and she is turned out at night, but when se was at the breeders for 6+weeks she was out 24/7 and got bleached out as her winter coat shedded.

looks like ill be clipping her this weekend to get the burned ends off.
