I had no idea I would have a reason to use the new forum so quickly! Many years ago when my kids were little I would trap a feral cat from the track and let her have her kittens at my house. After the kittens were weaned I would have the Mom spayed and release her back at the track and find homes for the extremely well socialized kittens. I felt like we got the fun of babies without actually contributing to the over population problem.
One of the many kittens ended up staying with us. He was a huge long haired cat we named Hairy. He was extremely friendly and loved to be petted. If you didn't pet him enough he would pet himself using you!
After 13 years with us he discovered my neighbor was catless as opposed to being one of three here. No need to share the attention so he moved in with her last summer. He lived like a king and slept on the youngest child's bed every night.
This morning he threw a blood clot in his lungs and was dead in less than five minutes. The whole family was watching unfortunately. I have him wrapped in a towel in my garage until my husband gets home tonight then we will decide if he gets buried here or at her house. He spent more time with us over the years but there is no question he loved them more. Godspeed Hairy.

Poor Hairy. His life was filled with love and his death was quick. The sign of a life well lived. Hugs to you on your loss of a great cat.

Hairy is buried in the far corner of our pet cemetery. It's really just a corner of the back yard but it is the final home for more animals than I can remember so he has plenty of company. Including a few animals he put there himself like the baby bunny he caught and put holes all the way through that refused to die. I drove the bunny to the race track and had my vet euth it then brought it back home and buried it.
There are two newborn kittens that I rescued from New Holland at one day old. There was a litter of five. I saved three of them and one still lives with us. Then the carnival goldfish that lived to be WAY too big to flush when he finally passed. Plenty of company but still a huge void to be filled. Thanks everyone.
