All starters are special because they share an intense and intimate moment with each competitor. The few that really make it their own and, with a few words, calm our nerves and send us on our way, better for having them at the box, are worth their weight in gold.
Thoughts for his family, friends, and all those competitors who will miss him.
Perhaps it's just because I really love and feel at home at the venues where Terry started us, but his last countdown and "Be safe!" always filled me with a sense of calm happiness as I was leaving the box. I usually event by myself. He knew it, and although he didn't know me from adam, he always asked about my ride. I always felt like he was looking out for all of us: admonishing us to stay safe, but loving to watch us play the game, no matter how long the day, or how lousy the weather.
Eventers are the best people going. You don't have to ride to be a true eventer. Terry was the real deal. He made such a difference to so many folks in the few minutes we had with him. My deepest, deepest sympathies to the family of this wonderful gentleman.
