Why We Get Fat -- Gary Taubes
I wanted to recommend this last OT Day but I missed it. If you're wanting to diet/lose weight/get healthier, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It's not a gimmick or 'diet' per se, either. It actually explains WHY we want to eat more/eat crap and not want to move as much. Very enlightening. And that's my PSA for the day

This was his first one on this and he is right, the science is behind him.
We have been blaming the wrong things for the obesity epidemic, know so much more now, but it is hard to change people, after we spent decades convincing them that they needed to eat a certain way and providing those foods for them:

Yep, but Good Calories, Bad Calories was a little intense for a lot of people to get through apparently, so Why We Get Fat is a lighter version.
On the eat less, move more, kind of a yes and no. The whole premise is that when you avoid what causes insulin responses (carbs, sugars, etc.) you naturally WANT to move more. You have more energy. And as I'm experimenting myself, I can eat much more and feel better as long as I'm eating meat and eggs and butter. Put carbs in front of me all day and I'll eat a ton more calories, be a cranky so-and-so, and want to sleep all day.
I don't really want to debate the whole no-carb diet thing on here though, just wanted to put the book recommendation up. It's the first thing I've read that really, honestly makes sense and is playing out in reality for me.
Just saying if you're struggling with weight/hunger/etc. borrow it from the library and make your own conclusions. But I highly recommend it.

It's about the insulin response to carbohydrates.
sounds interesting!

Much of that book is based on many years of research.
From the Americal Journal of Clinical Nutrition, here is a little bit of some late results quoted here:

Huh, sounds about right with what I have been reading lately. I've been applying something similar the past couple weeks I think (ie, being more aware of insulin response, sugars, etc - and I'm pretty sensitive in that respect already) and it works for sure. Adding this book to my Amazon cart today so it's arrived by the time I get back from work I'll have to actually read it asap though, since I already have enough super good reads sitting in my bookshelf that I haven't yet read (and SO makes fun of me all the time for it, haha). I get a little carried away in the bookstores...

I just took a peek at that on Amazon. It is so much like a book I'm reading now called "Nourishing Traditions" by Sally Fallon. I LOVE this book...her approach is 180 out from what much of the modern thought on avoiding animal fats (just like this book you recommended), avoiding refined carbs, sugar, etc... and it is full of fascinating diet recipes and information from traditional diets all over the world. She puts an entire chapter into discussing fats...the ups and downs of each kind of fat, vegetable or animal and the book builds on the foundation. I highly recommend it also.
The problem with so many diets is that you do them, lose weight, and then go right back to what you were doing. It must be a lifestyle change or it will never work.

Not in my case. I eat lots of carbs and sugars, lower fat.
I have lost 141 lbs and counting in the last 13 months as of tomorrow.
Where is the cheering icon?!?! <still another 59 to go, but this has been so easy! even at 53>
WOW! Good for you.
That ought to be worth two gold stars anyway.

They aren't kidding about the hidden part of hidden sugars. I get Ruby Red grapefruit juice (actually it's grapefruit, pear, apple and a few others) and wondered why some tasted different for others. I finally read the label and found out the 100% juice is pure juice, but the Ruby Red by the same company is with high fructose corn syrup-no wonder some tasted different and gave me an upset stomach.
I ordered the book, and I will wait and see what it says.
Fairview-that's wonderful!!! And I am cheering for you.

It was just my luck that I started last winter when I did, as my son decided to get married in December, and I was able to feel great, and not hiding from the camera!
