    Default The National Anthem butchered?

I am not even an American , and I know the words. How does someone like Christina Aguilera, manage to sing the wrong words and in general just butcher it, it was painful to listen to.

Best comment I heard about it: After what Christina Aguilera just did to the national anthem, she should marry it.

I dunno why they would even pick her to sing it. She peaked when I was starting college and that was almost a decade ago.

I liked how Whitney Houston sang it the best. They should just reply her singing it every year.

When she messed up the words, my DH and I both looked at each other to make sure we heard it right. OMG! how do you mess up the words to the national anthem at the biggest sporting event of the year??? She was so busy trying to get her R&B yodel on that she forgot what she was singing.

Totally agree that they should've let Lea sing it... she did a beautiful job on her song.

At least she doesn't suck as badly as that ugly girl from Glee. I think my ears started bleeding!

    But yeah, she sucked.

I like Christina. I think she has a solid technique and does her own rep justice. WHY she chooses to foul the anthem with the whiny, growly, fake-emotional grunting is beyond me. It's not the first time she's done it on the national stage, but I hope to god it's the last.

Oh, yeah, and she got the words wrong. Totally secondary, IMO.

She needs to never get hired for an anthem gig again. It's a disgusting mess every time she does it.

Aguilera has a voice but she is so intent on trying to do the "R&B yodel" (love that description) that she butchers every song. DH and I were discussing electronics one year and the store had a tape of her version of 'Christmas Songs' on loop

Don't know why both America the Beautiful and the Star Spangled Banner are sung at sporting events. Just get one artist to sing the the SSB, our national anthem, and be done with it. Lea would have sung the SSB best.

It's an anthem. Not an aria.

If she wasn't so busy doing all that howling and gyrating she might have got it right.
As it were, she sounded like two cats under a window.

I'd much rather hear someone sing it like an aria. At least then they'd be giving the text the respect it deserves.

We all stopped and looked at each other too...OMG, did that idjit just get the words wrong???

Who does NOT know the words? Especially if you're a professional singer and were asked to sing it at an enormous national event. You learn the freaking words. Moron.

The SSB is a *tough* song to sing. Many singers just aren't that talented to be able to hit all those notes in that song right. Not always a huge deal if they change the notes a bit to suit an otherwise lovely voice. But I loathe it when follks try to "make it their own" and totally screw it up.

I also agree that Whitney had one of the best all time SSBs in Superbowl history. She definitely had the talent and pipes to get it right and she was smart enough to not try to put her own major spin on it or do a stupid series of runs.

Was it just me or did Christina look like Cindi Lauper tonight?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it was awful. I thought the other girl sounded pretty bad too though. It reminded me of the terrible rendition of O Canada that was done by a young woman at the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver Olympics. Both anthems are beautiful and moving when done properly, it's such a shame that they rarely are. Actually, there is a young boy that sings both anthems at the Thunderbird shows before each grand prix and I think he does a better job than lots of the famous people that get chosen to do it for big, important events.
