Default medial collateral ligament of coffin joint injury... share your experiences.

I have a perch cross who injured himself this summer, not sure how or when. He was off and on grade 1-2 lame, then finally took him in for lameness exam. Gave him 2 weeks off and bute, came back and worked well for a month. All of the sudden he's grade 2 lame again. Went for MRI and found inflammation of the medial collateral ligament of the coffin joint, and fluid around deep digital flexor. Treating with IRAP injections of coffin joint (easiest access to the collateral ligament), and shock wave every 2 weeks x 3 treatments.

    Two main concerns:
    1. I've heard anywhere from 3 - 18 months off for this type of injury and 30 - 70% recovery rate depending on who you ask.
    2. They haven't mentioned anything about the fluid around the deep digital flexor, just read it in the report they gave me. Wondering why it's not a concern?

We're going for the 3rd treatment tomorrow so I'm going to try and sort through this. I'm sure there are no real answers but share your insights if you'v got any!

I brought one back from a similar injury. Some damage to all four collateral ligaments, with more on the outside of the RF and inside of LF. No fluid.

Did the shockwave and IRAP. Total time from diagnosis to starting to jump was about 8 months. My vet quoted me a 90-95% success rate with similar injuries.

That's the short version. The long one is in the blog linked in my signature line below.

If you do a search on collateral ligaments on this BB you will find a number of threads. Good luck!

Thanks for the link to your rehab saga, helpful info. 8 months seems pretty average and it worked out well for you. Congrats on a successful recovery!
