Default Trying to id Standardbred mare Wa State

A friend of mine has acquired a Standardbred mare with a freeze brand. She came with the name of Kit Kat, possibly Kit Cat, and was supposed to be 10 years old. The vet thinks she is nearer 7 years. I know nothing of the Standardbred registries operations and only know a little bit about the breed, other than reading "The Kentucky Harness Horse" and of course Marguerite Henry's book on Hambletonian and Born To Trot.

I did send a message through the USTA's board to ask how I could look her up but if anyone can give us some guidance we would be so happy. She is a very handsome bay mare, I do not think she has any white and she is butt high. Right now she is just came down with cellulitis after coming to her with a puncture wound in the gaskin area on the opposite leg that had not been tended properly. Poor girl, but she is settling in very well and seems extremely well educated, responds well to voice commands on the lunge and has been ridden for a few minutes before the cellulitis flared.

You can use the US trotting website and look her up.

How to read the freeze brand:

    Where to input the number:

US Standardbreds are freeze branded with their registration number in regular letter and number characters, not alpha angle system. Should be as simple as reading it off the neck and entering it into the lookup you linked above. It may be necessary to clip the part of the neck around the brand in order to read it at this time of year. If the freeze brand IS in alpha angle for some reason, the horse is most likely an AUS or NZ import.

You can determine her age by looking her up, of course, but also by the letter in the first position of her freezebrand (up until 2002) or the second position of her freezebrand (2003 and on)

    Freezebrand starting with:

    S 1997
    T 1998
    V 1999
    W 2000
    X 2001
    Z 2002

Freezebrand with this letter as second character:

    A 2003
    B 2004
    C 2005
    D 2006
    E 2007
    F 2008

    C 2005

Learned something new. I knew they were freezebranded and assumed (dangerous - I know) the alpha-angle system.
